One of the only "other" web sites I haunt is Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy forum ( www.bautforum.com). One section is devoted to media (TV, movies, etc.) and includes a number of threads on Firefly/Serenity.

Here's one recent dicussion you might enjoy:

There are several other threads on the 'verse, but this is the one most active at the moment.

I'm Donnie B. on that board. By the way, if you choose to chime in, be aware that BAUT is a family-friendly site, is tightly moderated, and does not tolerate strong language or flames (not that anyone here would do such a thing anyway).

America loves a winner!

I LOVE Bad Astronomy! One of my all time fav sites, if not by times visited, but for the good it does debunking kooky ideas. Granted, I'm sure it won't be too kind to things in our 'verse, but it should give at least partial credit.

I signed up a while back, but don't know if my membership is still active. Might hav to check on that though. Thanks!

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

Chiming in to agree that TBA's site is
worth visiting.

faves.

Ok, I think those folks are thinking a little too hard about a TV show.
I think there are just some things you have to forgive in TV - like why a lot of worlds in a lot of scifi shows look like Southern California.
Or that ships tend to all have gravity (because suspending your actors in wire is a pain in the ass, thats why)
The mechanics of getting from point a to b seem plausible enough - nobody has created magic engines like in Star Trek - light speed is still the law of the 'verse. You just pump out a lot of energy behind you and you go.
Terraforming would take thousands of years for a body like Mars, yes - given modern technology. In five hundred years - who knows where the state of the art will be. Look backwards 500 years and think how far we've come - from sailing ships to space shuttles.

"Don't put your trust in revolutions. They always come around again. That's why they're called revolutions. People die, and nothing changes." -Terry Pratchett "Night Watch"

Agreed. I've been trying to make some of the same points.

I get the feeling that Mr. Van Rijn over there has a somewhat different definition of "science fiction" than I do. And also that he's not too familiar with the concept of a fanwank.

But please keep in mind that BAUT members tend to be science and astronomy geeks and may hold things to different standards than the average Joe.
