It's odd, Serenity was set in exactly the same time period that Firefly was and featured almost exactly the same cast of characters, but over the past couple of months it has been at or near the Bottom of Amazon's 100 best selling DVDs list, while Firefly the Complete series is currently at about 45. How can two products which share basically the same cast and plot have such different performances when it comes to sales? Did a huge chunk of Firefly fandom loathe the film ? I know some fans did, but was that segment of the brown coat population big enough to guarantee that the movie would crash and burn on Amazon.com?

You get more bang for your buck buying the boxset vs. the BDM. Also, it is pretty hard to find Firefly at many retailers while the movie is still readily available, hence more online orders for the series vs. the movie.

And also the ratio of movies to TV shows on DVD is quite high when you think about it. A couple of new movies come out on DVD every day so that will keep pushing Serenity down. You might get one or two TV shows on DVD every month, and not as many people are willing to buy them for $50 bucks a pop when they can just watch reruns on some network.

You might be surprised at how much TV is coming out on DVD these days. If you look at the release schedule for the next few months (here's one: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30278), there are between 8 and 15 TV-related DVD releases a week. Some are repackaging of preveiosly released stuff (greatest hits, full series collections, and such), and some are single-disk sets, but at least 2-3 (often much more) a week are full season sets. Sales tracking has shown lately that TV shows on DVD are overtaking movies in sales.
