HISGOODGIRL

Just a gal out on the rim writing tales.

I was recently talking with a friend about my passion for all things Firefly and realized that, for me at least, being a Browncoat is about a lot more than just loving the show and the BDM.

It's shaped (and reinforced) my values and made me even more of a social activist than I already was. I'm more willing to take a stand, speak my truth and misbehave when confronted by a society and government that seem to striving to homogenize folk and impose their idea of values and culture on the world at large.

So, fellow Browncoats, how have you been changed by Joss's vision? How does your Browncoatyness express itself in your values and how you live your lives? I know this is deep stuff I'm askin' you to step off into, but ain't that what it's all about?

So, if you would, take a minute or two to think about this one, and then share your thoughts with the rest of us.

Keep Flyin'!

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

Hello HisGoodGirl!

I agree with you that Joss himself has impacted my thinking - but in a lot of respects Firefly & Serenity have really tapped into what was already there for me!

Being a browncoat means having friends all over the world! Being able to come to FFF.net and always find something warm, thoughtful, thought-provoking, or confuzzling... Something you can laugh at... or something you can feel so good about. I have genuine friends all over the world thanks to our initial love of FF/Serenity!

Being a browncoat means you meet others who recognise your T-shirt (JAYNE...I'll be in his bunk) and squeel with delight! It means that when you mention 'Firefly' someones face might light up in delight that you know what it is they have been loving... it's about holding on to truths and holding on to the dream that we'll get a little bit more of the story of our Big Damn Hero's one day!

Thanks for the thought - good idea for a thread!

Love you all - Magda x x x

Being a browncoat means standing up for the underdog, fighting for what you believe in, never giving up on what's important, and standing by your friends come hell or high water.

Being a Browncoat means that you're part of a family - you may never have met them before the moment that one of them spies you in a "Time for some thrilling heroics" T-shirt, but from that moment forward, they're your friend.

Being a Browncoat means instant acceptance - it doesn't matter what walk of life you're from, what experiences you've had - we've all stood by our show together. We've all bought movie tickets, DVD sets, tickets to conventions, cunning hats...all in the hope that someday, we'd get our miracle and get our heroes back.

It means that you live through heartbreak and the stress of hoping: every time news comes, we sit on the edge of our seats hoping, and no matter how many times our hopes don't pay off, we're still flying. Being a Browncoat is all about that hope. We lost the battle...but we haven't lost the war, so to speak, and that's what it's all about. It's about loving something enough to stand by it, even when it's ailing.

Or something like that.

"You can know all the math in the 'Verse, but take a boat in the air you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughta fall down, tells ya she's hurtin' 'fore she keens. Makes her home."

Yep... a whore, a thief, a retard, a criminal, a dishonest priest, a mercenary, and antisocial rebel captains have that effect on DEGENERATES

I think a browncoat is about having everything taken from you and still keeping the things you hold dear close to your heart.

I always think how Mal bought Serenity so he could be free. Then as time goes by he gathers a family around him that he is responsible for. So much for freedom. But he does follow the path he feels is right.

How different they all are. Who would picture Zoe and Wash together. But they work on accepting their differences.

They all have faults and problems to work out and they learn from facing them.

That is the show.

Being here. Sharing this experience with fellow Browncoats. Having fun playing the games and discussing the improbables. Taking risks. Learning from my own mistakes. I believe that diverse as we are we share the desires of belonging to a family and making friends with new and different people. We come from different backgrounds. We vary in age. There are a lot of differiences that would take pages to list here. But here we are sharing this fansite. So we bring hope that Firefly will return and enjoy the episodes we have. I have gone through the complete range of emotions while being at this site. I have all of you to thank for that. The wisdom you have given me. I hope I am wise enough to practice what you have given me.

I am afraid I will never learn to write short answers. But there is always hope.
