Over at Filmcritic.com, Christopher Null has undertaken the grave and important task of ranking the top ten cinematic spaceships. It's hard to argue with a list that includes the Millenium Falcon, Heart of Gold from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the Nostromo from Alien. But including both the Klingon Bird of Prey AND the USS Enterprise? C'mon. And the Apollo 13? Plus, no mention of Serenity! Still, who doesn't like to recall the glory of the Gunstar from The Last Starfighter?

The U.S.S. Entreprise beat out Serenity? Apollo 13? WHOA!

Admittedly, while I reallly like Serenity's design I've always thought everythign forward of the dining room (the exterior view) looked a little odd.

I feel the author cheated by including Apollo 13, which he even admits is a real-world vehicle. I'm sorry, but if you allow that, then there wouldn't be room on the list for a single fictional craft. Being real is a trump.

My own personal list?

10: The Luna (Destination Moon): It wasn't the first movie spacecraft to be rationally designed--the multi-stage craft from the German film Woman in the Moon did that first--but George Pal's/Robert Heinlein's elegant silver needle design influenced a generation of cinematic spacecraft. More than a bit dated, but still, a thing of beauty is a joy forever.

9: The Eagle Transporters (Space: 1999): Brilliant, functional modular design. Not really very credible as an atmospheric entry craft, but if the show's writing had been half as good as its spacecraft and set design, it would be considered a classic.

8: The Valley Forge (Silent Running): No deep-space ship in cinematic history has ever possessed such a sense of raw scale, of hugeness.

7: The Millenium Falcon (Star Wars): The original FTL hot rod, 'nuff said. Love the fuzzy dice.

6: The Star Furies (Babylon 5): The first cinematic fighter craft that was actually designed to be functional in zero-gravity. Example: the pilot did not sit in an airplane-style chair, but lay flat against a padded acceleration couch, so that the Gee-forces would be more evenly distributed. The fact that the vehicles also moved according to Newton's three laws added tremendously to verisimilitude.

5: The Yamato, AKA The Argo (Space Battleship Yamoto/Star Blazers): This one made the list more for sentimental reasons than believability. After all, it's a WWII battleship converted to an FTL starcraft--that's not science, not really, but it is poetry. Try watching the uncut Japanese version for a true sense of the sacrifice war calls for.

4: Galactica (Battlestar Galactica, original series): Yeah, the show was a rip-off of Star Wars, but the ship's design was impressively detailed, and gave a real sense of hugeness.

3: United Planets Space Cruiser C-57D (Forbidden Planet): It's hard to pick a single vessel as the archetypical flying saucer, but this beauty edges out the competition by virtue of her functional-but-spectacular interiors.

2: Serenity (Firefly [as if I had to tell you.]): No one has ever managed such a sense of realness in the interior of a spacecraft, before or since. I swear, I know every inch of her interior in my muscle memory--I know what it feels like to climb down the ladder to my bunk... And if the exterior design is a bit lacking in real-world aerodynamics, well, we're dealing with a world in which gravity control is a mature technology.

And the only reason she's not number one is--

1: USS Enterprise, NCC-1701, "No bloody A, B, C, D, or E." (Star Trek TOS): The first serious attempt, in a continuing series, at designing a space vessel as a believable community. Others have done it since, and sometimes managed it better, but they had the benefit of studying Trek's errors and triumphs. Being first counts.

Honorable mentions: Lots of 'em: The original White Star, and her many sister craft; the runabouts and the Defiant from DS9; The Delta Flyer, Discovery, The Nostromo and the Sulacco, the original Jupiter II, Liberator and Scorpio--the list could go on for days...
