I noted something that struck me as very interesting while watching "Out of Gas" that I hadn't noticed before. When Mal is down and out in the beginning of the episode he has a flashback of when he and Zoe first boarded Serenity and it occurs to me that Zoe is there before a firefly named Serenity. More specifically, when Mal has to get up or die his flashback has Zoe in it. She lifts him up.

And after Zoe is hurt, the flashback is of her and Mal meeting Wash. This flashback is prior to her loving Wash but Mal is there. Mal lifts her up.

(Yes, I know it was Mal's POV but I wanted to pretend it was Zoe's POV.) When the crap hits the fan these two dig deep and, lo and behold, they find each other there to inspire them to keep fighting for life.)

So, with that in mind I created the following poem.

"Out of Gas"

Serenity’s askew, in the Black, stopped
Listless on a dispassionate backdrop
Inside her an eerie calm replaces
The ghosts of laughter on the crew’s faces
Our Captain remains, alone and dying

A grievous injury he hath sustained
Death comes plying for another soul gained
Death’s knuckles rap, rap on memory’s door
Open it swings and back, back we explore
Back to then, when, a Firefly nurtured life.

Within a valley soaked in Death’s ardor;
Where many died from Independence War;
Our Captain’s Faith in a cross ebbed and waned;
His trust he gave his friend, Zoe Alleyne;
Firefly and Zoe, moors to drifting Life

His lungs open, close, open while he on his side
Dull, red, liquid life; slips, through grating, slides
Moors ignite and stoke the fires of passion
Resolve usurps face emblazoned ashen
With engine part in hand he stumbles up.

Stark contrast from the previous evening
When mirth swelled in communal gathering
It was Simon’s surprise birthday party
The crew, one and all, was close and hearty
Feasting, bliss, a Kaylee kiss; perfect, this.

Then it broke and the ship grisly muttered
The crew halted, the cake’s candles fluttered
A moment, all there would be, between bliss
And pain in oncoming horribleness
The terrible explosion frees Death’s steed

Kaylee, innocent, stands before the force
Her life to be trampled beneath Death’s horse
Instinct moves, Zoe shoves Kaylee aside
Now duty and love stand before Death’s ride
Blunt hooves crack her ribs and drag her below.

A grievous injury she hath sustained
Death comes plying for another soul gained
Death’s knuckles rap, rap on memory’s door
Open it swings and back, back we explore
Back to then, when, a Firefly nurtured life.

Within a valley soaked in Death’s ardor;
Where many died from Independence War;
Zoe witnessed a captain’s faith flounder
Her trust she gave to him, and it bound her
Firefly and Captain, moors to drifting Life.

Thanks for reading. Comments welcomed.

That's nice. Should put it to music.

6stringjack, I'm not very creative where music is concerned. Did you have a notion when you suggested that?

EngineAngel, you said "wow, I love it, great job." And thank you very much for saying it. I 'spose I could say something like "I'm driven by the creation of the thing, and having been created, my enjoyment of the piece is finished." But what a wheelbarrow full of crap that would be. The most joy I get is when someone says "I like it." That feels very good. Now if they go and do like you did, mentioning wow, love, and great...why, I think this gives me enough juice to write for the next month.

So thank you very much.
