Smallville further ripping off buffy?

My roommate was watching Smallville in the main room, and as I'd watched the show more or less entirely I decided to catch the season opener right before Angel's.

It didn't seem so bad, until the end. Clark's father was given superpowers in order to try to get clark to be good again basically.

Remind anyone of the end of season 6 of buffy?

Further comparisons:
1. It was a "father" figure on both shows, without actually being the characters father
2. They were both imbued by an outside force, whose powers they had no real command of
3. The stopping force(Giles/Jonathan) teleported to the destination on both, not of their own power, but by the same group that empowered them
4. The other thought themselves invincible in both, and based on the previews, Clark wins eventually just like Willow did.
5. To be continued after the very first hit by the father figure.



Maybe I'm just grasping at straws, but just....ugh, it seemed like a complete ripoff. Was this in the original superman comics or something?


P.S. Sorry if my pronouns aren't as clear as they should be :(

I think it is important to note pretty much NOTHING on smallville ever happened in the superman comics. It is a complete remaking of the character, only the names are the same to protect the innocent..er.. bring in the cash..

not a fan really.. but I wouldn't necessarily say they were ripping off buffy..

Yeah, the point of Smallville is to expand on what is otherwise unexplained in the comics: Superman's formative years.

I don't think Jonathan Kent teleported. I think he ran to Metropolis, used his ears (superhearing), and then used his eyes (x-ray) to find him. Just like Clark always does

There have been a lot of shows, movies, etc., that give the weakling equivalent superpowers to contain a threat. It was either this or the green kryptonite trick that they did for the first time Clark got a hold of red kryptonite. Hell, I was half expecting those kryptonite bars to still be there in the safe and Rutger Hauer swooping in and capturing him. That would've been pretty funny
