Can't tell if this is good or bad. I mean, publicity of any form is generally good, but...

A user on the doom9 forum has cracked HD-DVD's AACS protection by way of a utility that reads run-time data that is stored in unencrypted memory.

Serenity is the first HD-DVD that they cracked. So, thumbs up for ingenuity and exposure, but thumbs down that it's an iffy issue.

It means somebody can copy the supposedly copy protected HD DVD. Don't mean nothing outside of tedious discusions of copyright infringement versus consumer rights.

Well put.

Piracy vs. Legal backups and all that.

I happen to utilize both philosophies. I like to backup what I have, and occasionally copy something I don't. (come on, 2.95 per rental? that just screams 'copy me')
