So, I have a leather jacket, and naturally my first idea was to get a browncoat patch to put on the sleeve. I have a question about orientation for anyone:

In Serenity (pilot, not BDM) I'm pretty sure I see it facing two different ways. When Mal rips it off of the dead Lieutenant's coat, the point looks to be facing down (the camera angle is a little funky, but I'm pretty sure about it) with the stripes horizontal. A few minutes later, when Mal and Zoe make their move for the stationary gun, there's a clear picture of Mal's patch with the point facing up (bars still horizontal).

So, I guess my question(s) is(are): Am I seeing the first clip wrong, does anyone think orientation denotes rank in any way, was this just an inconsistancy, is there anything which definitively states the way it should face? (etc.)

Thanks!

You are absolutely right!

Meaning yes, it shows both orientations within a few minutes of each other. Now this is JUST MY OPINION, but I'd have mine oriented like the one on Mal's coat. I can see them having two or three takes of Nathan ripping the patch off the other soldier's sleeve, and maybe they put it on upside down while quickly getting ready for the re-take? But the one on Mal's sleeve is the way the patch was intended to be oriented by the wardrobe department. Again, just my 2 credits.

The companion says the patch was supposed to be star point up, trinagle point down.

Frankly, I could care less how it was supposed to be worn. Mal wore it star point down, that's good enough for me.

Thanks for your input, everyone! I just checked "The Message" and everyone with a visible insignia in the battle of Du-Khang has it with the triangle point up. I'm going to assume the drawings in the visual companion were just working ideas at this point. Anyway, thanks again, now my jacket will look extra-shiny.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I like the way it looks point-down myself. That's how it is on my coat. I'll have to check the Message again now, though.

BROWNCOATKAL

There are other threads regarding this, and I have gone looking for the answer. According to what I read, the way they were supposed to be worn by Browncoats is triangle point down, star point up. Also the star is supposed to be navy blue and not black as is often seen. The story I heard is that Joss always intended them to be star point up and somewhere along the line, there was a miscommunication or something with either clothing designer Shawna Tropic or a seamstress and the triangle was affixed to Nathan's coat upside down. If you look in the Official Companion: Volume One, you will see them on page 15 displayed triangle point down. Also when you flip them over and read the rank, you have to hold the patch triangle point down in order to read the rank.
So the question becomes what is true canon? What Joss originally intended, or what Nathan improperly wore on his costume?
