I have no idea why the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers would want to publish an article on Joss Whedon, but they have:

http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/apr07/4991

Got a few facts wrong (first ever Browncoat convention? I don't think so) but still pretty good.

Great article Doctroid. Only discrepancy I found was also the reference to a "first convention".

Nice to see an article about our Boss Joss.

Thank you.

Joss in IEEE Spectrum. He can say he's made it big now.

(IEEE can pay for Serenity II - I still won't join...)

So how does one get to participate in...

Next month, Whedon’s troops—some of whom call themselves Browncoats, after the independent army in “Firefly”—are convening for their first-ever convention.
...one presumes in May of 2007? The author fails to mention the name of this premier event, its venue, or dates and times. What a wonk.

Seriously though, the quotes from the creators of the online "Into the Black" series ("...complete with professional special effects, set in the Firefly universe...") seem intelligent and knowledgeable enough for me to seek that site out. Anybody care to clue me in as to its whereabouts?

Apart from those omissions/errors though, the article was an enjoyable read. I think they were perhaps a little wide of the mark, though, regarding the depth of Firefly's intellectual appeal. I, personally, don't relate to Firefly because it's an "underdog" story; rather, because it's an Everyman story. The Western genre -- never a particular favorite of mine -- is nevertheless a more-or-less distinctly American form, a 'man vs. the wilderness' form. And American Westerns -- the good, the bad and the ugly (no pun intended) -- touch the souls of human beings across the globe.

So, I prefer to think of Firefly as a 'frontier story', rather than a Western, although I realize that's just me being squeamish about the genre of 'Western'. I mean we've got the whiskey preacher, the Confederate outcasts, the whore with a heart of gold, the farm girl ... the opportunist who doesn't obey the law because he doesn't recognize it ... the Unionists who throw in with the Confederates because they're on the run from the evil in their own government.

Yep. It's a Western.

But it ain't an underdog story. It's just gritty reality, wrapped in a Western, surrounded by science fiction. Perfectly reasonable.

Respectfully,

zoid

P.S.
Because I forgot to say it in the body of my essay: F*x are a bunch of morons.

Oh! They could be talking about the 76th, maybe, and in a sense they would be right (although the "next month" business would be wrong) - at Dragon*Con this year (Labor Day weekend, Atlanta, Georgia), for the first time, there's going to be an Independent battalion marching in the parade.

More info here: http://76thbattalion.proboards59.com/index.cgi

If that's not what they're talking about, then I can't be of any help, because that's the only thing I've heard of which comes close.

Edit: Actually, now that I've read the article, I'm just confused...
