I was checking out Chinese symbols on-line and noticed several serenity ones that were the same as each other but different to the one on the ship.
This has been bugging me so, is the one on the ship Mandarin or something? I looked that up, but no matches.
Or was it just a big coincidence that I'll laugh about later?

Yes, I believe it is Mandarin. I'm big on languages, but more than a little lacking in knowledge on the oriental languages. However, in the commentary on the Out of Gas episode, it was mentioned that the warning low oxygen levels message was accidentally translated into Cantonese instead of Mandarin, which leands me to believe that Mandarin was their choice for everything else in the episodes and movie. IF all else fails, there's always this website... http://www.mandarintools.com/worddict.html I hope what little I have to offer helped.

No, it's not "Mandarin." Chinese is Chinese. Mandarin and Cantonese are more along the lines of totally different dialects (way over-simplification) - exact same written characters are pronounced entirely differently.

You find different characters for the same word because that's the nature of language and translation. Think of how many synonyms there are for the word or concept of "serenity," and you'll get the idea. (tranquil, calm, peace, etc.)

Also it might be considered that the name Serenity and the word serenity are done differently. There are plenty of occasions where a word's look or spelling is changed when it becomes a proper name.

May you have enough.
