I saw the episode on Apollo 14 last night. Adam was billed second in the credits.

Disappointingly, he had a rather small role. In fact, I don't think he was even the second-most prominent person in the cast. He had maybe six lines in the whole episode. (He played Fred Haise, who wasn't even on the mission -- he was Cap Com for A-14).

Perhaps it's some measure of his level of stardom, though, that he gets second place in the cast list even in such a small role.

(For those unfamiliar with the show I'm talking about, it's a mini-series that Tom Hanks produced for HBO some years back. It has dramatized accounts of the Apollo space missions, each told from a slightly different perspective. The main focus of this episode was Alan Shepard, who was the first American in space -- a 15-minute suborbital mission -- and didn't fly again for 10 years due to a medical condition. His lunar landing was only his second space flight.)

One of my most favorite series ever!

Wonderful, especially for a girl ( lady now ) who raptly watched the moon landing.

I remember Adam in that and he didn't have enough part...but I'm sure glad he was credited so highly.

I saw that miniseries when I was a kid and loved it. I guess if you're a sci-fi geek, then you have a predilection to the history of the Apollo space program and NASA and just anything that has to do with REAL space travel.

Tom Hanks does a really great job with stuff like this. Not only did he do this, but also the MAGNIFICENT DESOLATION IMAX movie he produced, which really was some incredible stuff. To think that you could accidentally step into a canyon that could dwarf the Grand Canyon and not even see it until it's too late.

FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON has a gigantic cast attached to it, so it makes sense that I wouldn't remember him from it. The one actor I remember was Bryan Cranston. Aside from Hal on MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE, I always remember him as Buzz Aldrin. Plus, in another Tom Hanks produced movie THAT THING YOU DO, he had a cameo as Gus Grissom. Pretty impressive to play two legendary astronauts.

Seeing stuff like that really makes me excited for the space program. I know that getting to Mars and exploring the stars isn't high on humanity's list of things to do (ending a pointless war and saving the environment definitely do need immediate attention), but I think a joined international effort to go beyond the moon to Mars, and maybe even beyond that would be a great unifier. The Apollo mission was created under similar circumstances. And we have much more advanced technology now than in the 60's. The computers that NASA used to send them to the moon had the same information and hard drive space that nowadays can fit into a pocket calculator. What we have now, we could probably find a way to make a fully working SERENITY, let alone a rocket.

Whoa Howdy DonCoat !

This is sort of a kwinky-dink since I just watched that episode a few nights ago...I figured that I'd post a thread about this very subject the next time I logged in here , and here you are ! You're downright River-esque , only less morbid and creepifying , and not as pretty as Summer Glau...

I think that Adam made a very credible Fred Haise . I also thought it was interesting that Haise was acting as capcom on A-14 , because he'd just survived the Apollo 13 incident . Usually , it seemed that the back-up crew during the Apollo era functioned as capcoms for the prime crew on the flight , so it seemed slightly odd that Haise would be a capcom on a subsequent flight , but he must have been filling in for someone else .

Adam Baldwin makes a good astronaut .
When I first saw 'The Cape' , I kept thinking ,
" Where have I seen this guy before ? " , and since I saw the Alan Shepard A-14 episode , I'm pretty sure that I'd been having some vestigial memory of Adam as "Freddo" in FTETTM , since I'd seen it in its first airings on HBO so many years ago now .

Adam Baldwin must hold the record for playing different space-men . Counting Jayne Cobb (he wears a spacesuit on EVA's , so he's an astronaut !), this is three different times Adam Baldwin has been cast as an astronaut . I doubt there's anyone who can beat that , although Ed Harris probably has a space-actor record of a sort , since he played John Glenn in " The Right Stuff " , and also a critical role as flight controller Gene Kranz in Apollo 13 .

I feel very fortunate that I've gotten to meet and speak with a number of the astronauts of Apollo , and the prior eras of American spaceflight , and I felt that the casting on From The Earth To The Moon was very , very credible .
The big standouts were the crew of Apollo 11 , and the guys that were cast as Deke Slayton
( Nick Searcy ) , and Alan Bean ( Dave Foley ) . Also , the guy who played Frank Borman , whose name I don't recall right now , but whose characterization of Borman was spot-on ! He looked like Borman and had the same sort of intensity as the man himself .

The guy who played Pete Conrad came off as cartoonish , because his take on that role was an amped-up caricature ; however , of the spacemen that I've met , I have to say that Conrad didn't strike me as very personable . But , Al Bean certainly liked him a lot , and was very grateful for the opportunity Conrad led him into .

Did you happen to get your DVD's at Costco ? I have waited for years for this set to become more affordable , so I'm very happy that I could finally get it from Costco for less than 25 bucks .

Hey. I've been around... and O2tB, though I may not be in Summer's class, I am so... very... pretty.

I thought Dave Foley was amazing as Al Bean. Is the real guy as loopy as Foley portrayed him? I know he's gone on to do oil paintings of space themes.

And while Adam was great as an astronaut, he wouldn't have made the grade in real life. Too tall. Didn't one of the actual rocket jocks have to compress his spine for a day before they measured him so he would come in under the limit?

'The Cape' on DVD...I'd buy it !

As for Armstrong , it might not be too difficult to meet an astronaut more personable than him...Am reading his bio now , which I found for $6 at Barney No-Balls , and for which incidentally , Mr. Clint Eastwood owns Film production rights .

Yup , even with tax , it came in a little under $25 ! But , when I got mine , the checkout girl said , " We sure are selling a LOT of these ! Is it good ? " , and I had to fill her in a little bit...Later , I went back to get another boxset , for a 'spare' , and there weren't any left !

I hope you have good success with your search...I checked Costco.com today , without success , and then I went to Froogle for a broader search...The best prices available seemed to be around the $40+ range , and even Wally-Mart was in the $60's , so Costco was quite the bargain !

I love it when Costco kicks the go-se out of the Big Blue Box !

My take on Foley as Al Bean would be 'exuberant'.
Hey , if I was stuck in Apollo Applications with a possible , eventual , ghost of a chance of flying on maybe Skylab , and Conrad came and asked me to be his LMP and walk on the Moon , I'd be exuberant also !

I think C.C. Williams was the astronaut who made the grade with the spinal compression effort...If memory is correct , he eventually was killed in a T-38 accident in Florida...The Talon was known by pilots as the 'White Mosquito' , or by others as 'The White Rocket' , so it could get away if not reined-in well...

Is Adam over 6'4" in height ? Shuttle-era flight crew have been accepted at least up to that early limit , but it may actually be more than that now , with better crew suits and different seats onboard the Orbiters .

I saw the set for $24.95 at WalMart (on the shelf) a week or two ago.

Has anyone compared the original set (Fullscreen) with the new widescreen transfer? I've read that the new transfer is just cropping off the top and bottom of the fullscreen transfer, but haven't read anything definitive about it.

I saw that episode the other night also! I was sittin' there not really payin' attention and thought to myself, "Hey, that sounded like Jayne", and I'll be damned if it wasn't Adam.

Just got in from Costco again...No joy on seeing

any more E2M boxsets there today , but I did see

that they'd restocked lots of Buffy and Angel

sets , and they even had about 4-5 Firefly sets

thrown into that mix...MMMmmmm , Firefly at

$16.99 ! Gives one cause for lots of hope , and

warms the heart a bit...Quite a bit !

Also , I saw they still had a couple of IMAX

sets , 9 DVD's in that box , several of which are

'Space' films , which was $51.99 , and the new

'Planet Earth' documentary , at the same price .

Speaking of 'Space' films , there's a new indie

documentary coming in September , which Ron

Howard has gotten behind and will apparently

promote and distribute .

It's called "In The Shadow Of The Moon" , and

it's been well-received and awarded...

There are some preview clips out and about in

Cortex-y places...Looks Great !
