Fatal Cat disease resulted from ticks found in Mississippi

My aunt emailed me about this. It's been found mainly in Mississippi I guess. Don't know if it's reached other states. Has been found to have caused many cat deaths, some of which were unexplained beforehand.

cats rarely survive this and the symptoms can be difficult to notice in some cats.

Mine are too, but I wonder if they can get it from my mom's dog when he's around them or if I can carry it myself when I visit my other aunt and uncle (who live in the country) and give it to them.

Does it work that way? I don't know.

I live in Ohio though, not Mississippi.

I think it can if a tick doesn't attach itself ( say to you or the dog) and then transfers to the cats.

I check my dog frequently during the season. I've found 3 or 4 this season, but I usually find them before we go inside and it's really easy to spot them on a boxer, short fur. None of the ones I've found on him have ever gotten attached. I don't know if that's because I found them almost as soon as they get on him, or if it's because I use one of those flea/tick/mosquito applications on him.

A neat trick if you ever find one attached is to put one finger on it and briskly rub in a circle, then change directions and keep doing that 'til it lets go. Maybe it makes them dizzy?

My mom gets something for fleas from the vet for him, but I don't remember if it's for ticks too. It may be I don't remember. He gets it once a month and I think I remember her saying she's out of it for the moment so I doubt she has the box sitting around. She's at work now or I'd ask her what it's called so I can call the vet and find out for sure.
