Was poking around the net, when I came across something about TV show I just loved as a kid (with an EXTREMELY tragic twist in regards to one of it's stars). The show was called "Voyagers!" and it was one of those entertaining-but-educational type kids shows from the early 80's. I'd nearly forgotten about it.

The amusing part was something I'd never seen or read about, and it so reminded me of our beloved show, I had to share here...

(While reading, replace the word "voyagers" with "firefly" lol)

'THEY TOOK MY SHOW AWAY!' A DAVID LETTERMAN SPECIAL

(This 'afterschool special' came from 1983 after NBC unfairly cancelled Voyagers! It showcases David Letterman taking a stroll through the park with Jimmy explaining the meaning of life and why they cancelled his favorite show...)

Dave: Jimmy are you gonna do homework all night? Don't you think you ought to watch a little t.v?

Jimmy: I will Mr. Letterman, I just want to finish in time to watch my favorite show 'Voyagers!'

Dave: Voyagers? It's a fine program, keep your eye on the clock so you don't miss one action packed minute. (Looks at Newspaper headline)

Dave: Uhhhh, Jimmy, what do you say we go for a little walk alright? (hides newspaper to canned laughter)

Jimmy: What about my show?

Dave: Well, we can talk about that outside. Ok?..Do you know what it means for a show to be cancelled Jimmy?

Jimmy: No, I don't think so..

Dave: Well, it's when a bunch of executives at a television network, decide that a t.v show shouldn't be on the air anymore. And then they take it off, and replace it with something new. Sometimes that's a good idea, oh, because the show is filled with bad acting and bad writing
and sometimes it's the executives who have been bad.

Jimmy: This cancellation business, it..it could never happen to Voyagers, could it?

Dave: Yes Jimmy...and I'm afraid it has. Jimmy?...Jimmy? Hey Jimmy!! (Of course, the kid ran away..hahaha.) Jimmy! Jimmy! Aww, Jimmy, hey I've been looking all over for you, hey hold on there! (Jimmy tearing t.v guide.) I know how you feel. It may hurt at first, but believe me you're gonna get over it.

Jimmy: You don't understand! Nobody does!

Dave: Jimmy, just because a show is cancelled, doesn't mean it goes away forever. It can live on through re-runs, syndication.

Jimmy: You mean I might see Voyagers again!?

Dave: Well, maybe in some form or another...You know Jimmy, I remembered when they cancelled the six million dollar man. Boy I thought my world was gonna end. But the the' Fall guy' premiered and..my prayers were answered. Sure, it was a different time, slightly different format, but i adjusted and you know what? I grew a little in the process too.

Jimmy: I know what you're saying Mr. Letterman, but Voyagers, it was different. It was really special. I don't think I'll ever watch t.v again!

Dave: Jimmy, don't EVER say that! Not even as a joke.

Jimmy: What should I do?

Dave: I tell you what? I'll show you the NBC fall schedule. C'mon... And I have a feeling we're gonna find a new show for you that just may turn out to be as good as Voyagers.

Dave..hmmm..oh, here's a show called 'Manimal' this one's about a crime fighter that can turn into a snake and a bird...this one is about a chimp who lives in Washington. You know that'll be good. Jimmy I don't think we'll have anything to be worried about.

Jimmy: And to think I was sad they cancelled Voyagers! This is gonna be the best t.v. season ever!

Dave: I think it will Jimmy, I think it will.

I used to love that show! A couple of weeks ago, something made me think of it. Enough to want to look it up. But I couldn't rightly remember the name of it or it's star, but I remembered how he died. Deadcelebrities.com came in handy. Just a tragic accident.

Apparently the show JUST came out on DVD last month.

I'd look into it, but my husband would never let me watch it :P He thinks it's dumb :P Before you judge him too harshly, he IS a browncoat, and lets me watch Firefly :) (I say "let" but it's because we each have the right to veto anything that goes on the TV we share :P Not because he actually has to approve what I watch or anything lol)

I haven't thought about that program in years either. Amazing, I could remember parts of it and it is 24 odd years ago. Looks like the kid in it was one of them child stars that didn't make it through to being an adult actor.

I used to watch it religiously.

P.S. Does anyone know who John Doe was going to turn out to be?

I heard the deal with John Doe (said in an interview with a producer or writer or something like that) was that he died, and when you die, you get like, all the knowledge, or all god's knowledge or some such sort of thing. Didn't go into detail on why he came back or anything else, that I remember, but I might have forgotten.

I always thought it was funny he didn't know who he was and stayed in the U.S, when he had a strong Aussie accent.

Thanks for the info SHADESIREN

Voyagers....The lead actor who accidently shot himself in the head was John Erik Hexum. The kid on the show was Meeno Peluce, brother of the girl who played Punky Brewster, Soleil Moon Frye (no relation to Kaylee). It was a fun show.

The worst part of Jon-Erik Hexum's story is he was goofing around because he was bored, picked up a prop, and PRETENDED to shoot himself in the head. A stupid move myself and any other 'dark humored' individual might pull - 'ha-ha, look, i'm so bored I'd rather shoot myself'... except the prop gun he picked up was loaded with a blank, and the wad from the blank shattered his skull cuz of the close range. Talk about a tragedy that could have happened to anyone.

Maybe it doesn't count because I think it went more than one season but what about The Greatest American Hero?
