BLINDOUTLAW

Found this nice little article about story lines for the sequel to the BDM. Have a look, see ones you like, see some you don't.

Comment on all

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Interesting.

Book's backstory. Who doesn't want to know it? I figure Joss will never get around to telling that part of the story though. In Serenity Book tells Mal he doesn't have to tell Mal about his past. I think in some small part that was Joss telling us he preferred to keep Book's past a secret the man would take with him to his grave and one we would never be privy to.

More crew deaths and peril. Peril? Sure. Yes please. It makes for an interesting and edge of your seat ride. Crew deaths? Not so much. I still get choked up every time I watch Serenity and watch Book and Wash die. I don't think I could take the loss of another character.

No more River Tam story? Well, I have to agree I would not want River to be the pivotal story in a sequel. We know about what the Alliance did to her and why. We saw some resolution to that story in Serenity, no need to dwell more. I would like to see a more encompassing story in the sequel, something all the crew can take part in.

Serenity Valley? I don't know that I want to see a two hour movie about the Battle of Serenity Valley. While it would be shiny to see more of the Captain and Zoe's exploits in the fight and the battle sequences would be incredible, it would mean the exclusion of the rest of the cast. No thanks. Perhaps a flashback that sets the stage for a character who plays a part in the sequel?

Joss writes but someone else directs? Not so sure about this one. I dug the fact that Joss directed the BDM and I think he did a fantastic job. If Joss went this route I would want it to be someone who loves this story as much as Joss and the rest of us, someone who would pour everything into it to make the best movie possible. Maybe Tim?

THESOMNAMBULIST

Hmmm. Can't say their top five were particularly inspiring. The idea of having Books' backstory when we already know what happens to him is weak. It's interesting but weak, and need be no more than a moments dialogue that maybe explains his past. Certainly no reason for it to be the focus of a film.

Crew deaths and peril. Hmm not this time. You can only do that so often before you lose peoples investment in the characters. Frankly you're not going to achieve that jolt again a second time around, especially when it was maybe one of the most loved characters who went in the first place. Peril, well yes to a certain extent. That will keep the tension for sure.

No I'm seeing and hearing a great deal of past events brought back here. There really is no need. What the show needs and what was so great about the show to start with was the fact that the crew and their endeavours moved on and grew from one episode to the next.

If a sequel is really going to happen and if you really want to see another sequel thereafter, the whole premise must move on aswell. Remember there are a hell of a lot of executives out there who are going to be prejudiced on account of the show having been cancelled. This will be significant in their minds. So unless there is enough 'new' content they'll just say its a bust and too risky a project to invest in.

Obviously it needs to still be 'SERENITY' essentially but it must be 'SERENITY' two years on (in terms of cinema, not chronologically within the show)

At least those are my thoughts anyway.

LADYSERENITY

I haven't taken a look at them myself just yet, but I agree with the discussion as it is. I don't think that I could handle any more deaths of our crew. Wash's and Books was more than enough. When I saw the movie in the theatre the first time Wash's death was such a shock that I didn't absorb a lot of what came after. I understand that Joss was showing us that the peril was real to the crew and that it would eventually catch up with someone but still. I thought he was going to kill off half the crew by the end of things- Simon's gonna die! Ran through my head the rest of the film after he gets shot- I still cringe when I see it.

So if there is a sequel I hope there is peril but no more deaths- people can come close without actually dying- that would be okay ( what am I saying!) I don't think we will ever know Book's backstory and River's story has been told. I would like to know more about Inara- and what happened on Signon- after all when she left Serenity she didn't go back to Signon.

I will leave it up to Joss- who should direct as well- no one can bring the Verse and our crew to life as they should be like Joss can.

Once you've been in Serenity you never leave. You find a way to live in it.

Fun to see other's ideas, but I would hope Joss would stick to his guns on it if it were to happen anyway. His ideas are always right, I've come to believe, even if they occasionally piss me off !

Buffy: I'm just worried this whole session's gonna turn into some training montage from an '80's movie.
Giles: (sighs) Well, if we hear any inspirational power chords we'll lie down till they go away.

AYCEOFSPADES

I'd just like to see the sequel go back to the Firefly tv episode roots. Just the crew, on a job, getting into scrapes and fighting their way out.

I think BDM was a great movie and answered a lot of q's we may have had, but for a sequel, I'd just love a Firefly story told. I'm sure Joss has many left to tell.
