***IF YOU'VE NOT SEEN SERENITY THEN DON'T READ*** There may be spoilers.

Hey I was just wondering.

Was it ever mentioned why Simon didn't take River back home to their parents to clear his name (if you will) with his father and establish that he was right in his belief that River was being tortured? Also River seems not to have brought up the notion of going to see their parents. Any ideas why?

Just wondered.

I have a memory that goes something like this:
River: "This isn't home."
Simon: "No, we can't go home, if we go home they'll just send you back to the Academy."

It seems like sound reasoning to me. Presumably those looking for Simon and River are looking straight at their parents on the off chance Simon might bring River back there.

America loves a winner!

From the flashbacks in SAFE, I think, Gabriel Tam was more concerned about the family's social status, and what the apperances a former genius doctor turned fugitive son might do to their name and good standing. In short, River and Simon's parent's didn't want to rock the boat, and were content to playing w/ in the rules. The last thing they wanted to become would be upstarts, those who questioned the system, even at risk of losing one or both of their own.

Yeah I guess that's it. Just seems that all that stemmed from their parents believing that River was in no harm. Once Simon rescued River I would have thought that a different case though. Maybe not. Granted the authorities would have been keeping a watch on the parents place but still.

What do you think now after the movie though. Should there be a sequel, do you think the Tams would return home?

If there ever should be a sequel, or a comic series continuing the storyline, I would like to actually see Simon and River return hom to deal with the vast distance between them and their parents.

Not to plug a long dormant fanfic, but if you want to read a potential version of the "coming home" story, I've written a fanfic series called YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN. In short, it's 4 years since the beginning fo FIREFLY, the Alliance has collapsed, and they're given a message to return home to Osiris, where they discover that not only is their family broke but so is the entire planet, home has turned into something out of GREAT EXPECTATIONS, Regan is dying of leukemia and Gabriel is a barely functioning alcoholic. And shocker of shockers, they both actually feel overwhelming guilt about what happened to River. I just go so sick of seeing them portrayed as heartless mosnters (one of Joss' weaknesses is his obvious daddy issues that every character on his shows have, except for Fred), that I decided to go the tragic figure route.

And I know it's been over a year since I've posted anything about it, but I plan to start up again and get the rest of it posted.

I don't think it's a "but still" kind of situation. Simon's only goal is to keep River safe, he's not going to sacrifice that to go see parents that abandoned River and cut him off. To go there to say, "See, I was right," would be to put everything he has worked for at risk out of pettiness, to go there to reconcile would be to put River at risk in an almost certainly doomed attempt to reunite with someone who clearly doesn't love him, and clearly doesn't love River.

I don't see Simon doing something that would put River at that great of a risk.

Not really. Other than the fact that the parliament is not forgiving, there's also the fact that Simon has now done a lot more than disrupt a dinner party, he and River just embarrassed the entire Alliance. If a dinner party interruption is enough to cut Simon off and cause the, "I will not come for you," speech I think they'll have been thoroughly disowned by now, assuming they weren't already when they became known fugitives.
