Hi everyone,
I would like to make some videos for Firefly and Serenity and would like to know where I can get some free video clips to use for my videos. I have a friend who is making Harry Potter videos and she sent me a url for the site she gets her video clips from but that site only carries HP videos. I do have a site for screen shots, but I would like to mix up my videos with some live action shots.

Are you talking YouTube type quality of video or something of a greater quality?
YouTube is probably the most accessible and easist to get stuff from (just search for a downloader so you can save off the files to your harddrive).

What quality/format do you intend the finished piece to be in?

I'm sure there are sites out there but there has to be issues with copyright that would put people off posting higher quality clips in any great amount.

Assuming you have the DVDs can you not rip the clips you want from the discs?
A lot of the software for doing this is free.
Try this site for some guides and links to software.

I find them invaluable for their advice and keeping up with the latest software.

Thank you for the help. Honestly the clip will be posted to youtube and will be made with windows movie maker, so I am not planning on making anything of a super high quality standard, and I have tried to rip some scenes from my dvds but my copy of Nero says that the copy right protection prohibits the ripping of these dvd. I really don't want to do anything illegal so I am willing to pay some site for these video clips.

Okay then, as a start try these programs:

DVD Decrypter (Free)
Nero (you already have it)
Riva FLV Encoder (Free)

DVD Decrypter takes the files off the DVD and saves it to your harddrive without any protection. Bear in mind that a full DVD disc may be around the 8GB area. The files will be saved in the .vob format which is the standard DVD format.

If memory serves me right Nero (or at least Nero Vision Express) can load the .vob's and you can do your editing etc from there and then save/export in a suitable format (.mpg or .avi both work with Riva but others may as well).

Then load that into Riva FLV Encoder, set your settings and encode.
Voila! you should have an .flv file ready for uploading on YouTube.

If you find these okay you might want to use the site I mentioned to find a better editor instead of Nero. It's pretty crap really but will do for what you are planning and get you going. Windows Movie Maker won't load .vob's.

As for copyright then that depends on your own point of view. Yes using clips is illegal but most of the stuff on YouTube is illegal. Whilst not an official statement, most PTB tend to ignore it as the quality is poor and is really of no use other than watching online. E.g. you wouldn't convert it to DVD and watch it cause it would look horrendous. If you posted full quality clips then it would be a different case.
Just look at all the music videos on there that use clips from peoples fave shows/films. And you are limited to a ten minute runtime.

And if anyone offers to 'sell' you clips on a site then they are definitely illegal. Only F*x could do this and why would they when they can just have you buy the DVDs.

Good luck and any other help you need just ask.

I have a little over 900GB hard drive space so ripping a complete movie would not be too big an issue
