Okay, so I'm a little late to the hulu.com party. But, I was browsing their TV shows (I may decide to turn off cable altogether, and just pay Cox for hi-speed) and of course I found all the episodes for Firefly. Not really that much of a surprise, considering that both F*x and NBC/Universal are founding content providers for the site. But then I found something a little curious, when I browsed the TV listings by studio (

).

If you scroll down to F*x's section they have several outlets listed: FX, Fox News, Fox Sports, etc. They also have two listings for plain old F*x TV. One appears to consist of 'classic' shows that are out of production. The other consists of shows that are currently in production for this season (or cancelled this season). ...With the exception of a couple of shows that may have been cancelled before their time, and might have some value as future productions. I think you might recognize one of them.

The carte of shows, in the latter listing:

* 24
* American Dad!
* Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?
* Back To You
* Bones
* Canterbury's Law
* Cops
* Family Guy
* Firefly (ahem... *cough*)
* Futurama
* Hell's Kitchen
* House
* In Living Color
* K-Ville
* King Of The Hill
* Kitchen Confidential
* Kitchen Nightmares
* The Loop
* MadTV
* The Moment Of Truth
* New Amsterdam
* Prison Break
* The Simpsons
* So You Think You Can Dance
* Stacked (the exception that proves the rule, i hope)
* Standoff
* Talkshow with Spike Feresten
* Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
* 'Til Death
* Unhitched
* Vanished

Not necessarily saying that we're in any danger of being resurrected by F*x. I simply offer the observation that our little castoff show is in the high-value list, even tho' the last episode aired more than 5 years ago. F*x must think something of us...

Peripatetically,

zoid

P.S. (because there had to be, or else you'd think I was an imposter)

Why, oh why, are the Firefly eps not available in HD on Hulu?! Most of the movies seem to be available in 420p, and I know UHD aired the HD eps. So why no HD, fer Pete's sake?

P.P.S. (ibid)
To any F*x TV execs out there: Wanna see the asterisk go away? Bring back Firefly. You miserable bastards.

I don't think they'll resurrect the show. However, they now recognize that you can't stop the signal.

yeah, i'm not asserting that. it's just interesting to note that the 'classic' list has some shows that were on longer and cancelled more recently.

hey, wouldn't y'all like to see a couple of F*x programming execs appear on "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth-Grader"?

i know where i'd put my money. over-under is 'second grader'. i'm betting the under...

Beating on Rupert Murdoch's republican love child never gets old. The reason he cancels good shows is because he hates people, unless of course they are wealthy, which just means that they are better people than us right?

I'm betting Firefly's made a few more bucks for them then the classic shows. Still, kinda neat it's considered hot property to F*X.

Yep! Hot Property!

$6,492,518 Firefly USA DVD sales in 2007. Sold 231,837 DVDs. That is 2007. And that is only the weeks were Firefly got into the top 30 DVD sale chart in 2007 And only USA figures.

And like Joss is going to be in the same buildings. Like Joss, what ya doing in the Dollhouse off season. How about a straight to DVD Firefly episode?

I keep hearing that Firefly has done about $40 million since the DVD set was released. Given the way sales were declining through 2007 (and into this year). The DVD was released in December, 2003, and there were heavy pre-release sales. So $40 million total is possible. Most of that goes straight to Fox's bottom line. Has to be one of their more profitable cancelled (before the end of the first year) series...

I don't think you mean decreasing. I'm hoping for some Firefly numbers in 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003. But they have only gotten back to October 2006. Sales were hot when Serenity was released in 2005. You can see the Amazon tracking chart http://www.fireflyfans.net/amazon.asp

So yeah, Fox sold lots of DVDs. Lots!

2007 at least 231,837 DVDs for $6,492,518
2006 ?
2005 ?
2004 ?
2003 ?

Fox knows the total and like Joss is in the same buildings.

Based on the position pattern on Amazon, sales appear to have begun to decrease last year, but, yes, before that it probably did get a big bump from Serenity (it sure did per the Amazon top sellers list.)

What's interesting is the huge sales TV shows are getting. Actually, the increase in DVD sales over the last few years have come from releasing lots more old TV shows, including some that were cancelled early. In the past, those shows were lost forever. But now they are seen as little gold mines, as they often had small, but dedicated, fanbases.
