I have seen the future....and it goodness that requires a bottomless pit of money.

Let me list a few facts for you.

I'm a bit of an AV, gadget collector.
I had a DVD player and was importing the discs before my local HMV had ten titles on the shelf.
I had full Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound before my local multiplex.
I knew that at some point I would go to HiDef but the format war and cost always put me off.
The next gen games consoles arrived and I said that the one thing that would make me buy an Xbox360 would be the new GTA IV.
It was released and I held off. Then I played it last weekend on a mates PS3. The following day I bought an Xbox360 and GTA IV. Its excellent and very shiny.
Then today I went to get Halo3 and found myself wandering in the HDTV area, thinking to myself maybe I should get one to get the most out of my console. I didn't get the TV but I did think of the future....

I thought that if I get a TV I can get the BDM on HD-DVD (for fairly cheap I hope as they are a defunct video format) and all will be shiny.
Then I thought that when Firefly comes to BluRay I could get that along with a BluRay player and The Sarah Connor Chronicles as well. Even shinier

I am currently in the 'I want it now' stage (even though I know that I can't yet). Soon I will hit the stage of 'reality' with a hard thump as I think of the money and the practicality of it.

But the idea is in motion and I'm not one to let something go.

Anyone else like this?
Have you bought expensive items for just one thing (initially anyway)?
Will I go crazy with the waiting?

As for the five degrees if your curious:
HDTV, BDM on HD-DVD, BluRay Player, FF on BluRay, TSCC on BluRay

I've bought a CD just for 1 song...I've ordered "combo" meals just to get the entree (and the toy prize, where applicable)...and I once walked away from an entire Berkely Salad at Kirby Lane in Austin 'cause I found belatedly that it had fruit in it. And then there was the truly embarrassing incident at Best Buy with the i-Pod.

I say all that as a seemingly pointless build-up to this: I feel your pain

It was all desperate yearning and unrequited toy lust when we got here!

I had full depth and range surround sound imaging years before DTS, THX, or even they had a name for surround sound.
I got the HiFi VCRs just for the digital audio track.
Would like to get the HD player now that they should be sheap, and hope to get a HS Serenity DVD.
I've heard Blu Ray is just a mess, a rip-off. Waiting to make another move.

Yeah, I agree that BluRay is a ripoff, but it looks like the only hard format for the immediate future (unless there's one I've not heard about around the corner).
I actually wanted HD-DVD to win out over BluRay. Partly coz of the Xbox as I knew I'd never own a Playstation (don't like the controllers and the PS3 is way overpriced). Partly coz of the BDM. And partly coz they are cheaper.
Okay I believe (and I may be wrong on this as my memory is fuzzy) that BluRay has greater capacity discs but how many HD-DVDs are actually gonna be full. Not all DVDs are full even with extras.

It's a moot point at the moment anyway as after the TV I won't have the cash for it. Need to go on holiday at some point this year as well.
