I was thinking of building a life sized model of a space ship out of either plywood and fiberglass or some other material like maybe aluminium tubing, so the ship would be easy to take apart and move to a sci-fi convention. Now I know that a life sized model of Serenity would be too impractical to make and then move around, so I was thinking of making either an Eagle from Space 1999 or Jupiter II from Lost in Space. The plans for an eagle say it is something like 76 feet long, but some people who are making life sized models are making them something like 122 feet long so they would have interior hallways where real people could walk in. I am thinking I might make the ships life sized and not worry about the insides being accurate because the ships of yeteryear were not designed to be accurate, but what do you people think? Is this something which had been done to death, or is this a project too intensive? Would a ship like either of these be appreciated at a convention? I've really only been to three Star trek Conventions in Montreal and Burlington Vermont so my experiences are very limited.

I would go with a Viper- much less life-absorbing and costly...plus: cool ship. It (or any other full-size ship) would definitely be the life of the con!

Go for itisall

I have thought about a viper, but have been leaning towards the Jupiter II because it was my first real love of a space ship as a kid. I really can't remember which came first the Viper or the Eagle because weren't those shows out at about the same time?

How about one of Serenity's shuttles? Nice swing wing action, and you could fit out the interior like Inara's...

When I first glanced at that , I thought it said ,

" Nice swinging action " !

Which makes sense , in the case of Inara's shuttle...I'd 'swing' with her...

Build the hovercraft version of the Mule. Not too big. Transportable. Lots of right angles.

There are several things to think about.

Transport of the ship. You would probably need to rent a large cube van if you can build the ship so it breaks down.

Hotels should have frieght elevators but you should make sure the parts can go through the doors and hallways. Some older hotels have narrow hallways.

Make sure there is enough space to display the ship. some hotels are small but convention centers should be fine.

Lawyers - yeah they ruin all the fun and there might be liability issues. Does the insurance of the sci-fi convention allow something like this. What if someone got hurt getting in or out and someone sued?

Thanks for the pictures and advice. I would like to make the ship out of fiberglss like the ones displayed for that professional look, but I don't have access to a shop which deals with fiberglass and I wouldn't know how to do that. If I made this vehicle I would have to modify the plans so the ship would be transportable and I would bring it to fairly local conventions via my 3/4 ton truck with a trailer.

I've looked at the plans to Jupiter 2 and for an Eagle and have come to the conclusion that they are too difficult. I will now look at the Viper and see if that would be easier.
