Brain cramp , cause I know this has to have been posted long before, I'm just now thinking of it.

What order did everyone become a part of the crew ? Well, we know about Book, Simon and River, but the others ?

We know Mal and Zoe were the first, and then likely Wash, as there needed to be a pilot. Mal might have done that job, at first, but I'm thinkin' not for very long.

So, Mal, Zoe, Wash..... Bester ? He was certainly on before Kaylee, but when did Jayne make the scene ? Was he before or after Kaylee?

Bester was before Wash, wasn't he? Mal referred to their "genius mechanic" after talking with the mustached Wash.

I also think Inara came on board before Jayne - mostly due to the order of the flashbacks in OoG.

Here's my take on the question:

1. Mal - buys Serenity after the war
2. Zoe - joins Mal as first mate
3. Bester - hired to get the ship ready
4. Wash - hired to fly the ship
5. Kaylee - fixes ship, gets hired, Bester gets fired - all in five minutes
6. Jayne - tried to cheat Mal and Zoe, ended up joining them
7. Inara - rents the shuttle; she says to Book she's been on aboard for eight months in "The Train Job"
8,9,10. Book, Simon, River come on board in "Serenity"

The only one we could doubt is between Jayne and Inara but I always got rhe feeling Jayne was on board for more than eight months. Maybe also Kaylee but again I have the feeling she came on board before Jayne and Inara. In my fanfics I always have her on the ship before the others.

the only members i'm waffling about are jayne and inara, i agree with all the other placements...the only argument i can really make is, wouldn't Mal want to have a crew before he decides to start renting out? Make sure you have enough hands to get the job done before you go looking for other sources of income? They *did* find jayne on a backwaterish type moon with his buddies, which they might not want to lead Inara too right away, adding to the argument that they probably picked her up afterwards (and since when Mal and Inara were talking about the conditions of rent, she said 'under no circumstances will i be servicing you or your crew,' which means he probably had more than one male crewman aboard), but then they could have dropped her off somewhere else before hand to run the quick job and come back.

I don't know, it's a tough call. real tough call *has brain cramp of own now*

In order to answer this question, there needs to be a clear understanding of just who constitutes the ship's official crew - prior to the events of Serenity - and who does not. The ship's official crew - prior to the events of Serenity - consisted of the following:
Mal
Zoe
Wash
Kaylee
Jayne

With that established, all we need do is turn to Out of Gas to establish the order in which each of the ship's crew joined up. That order is as follows:
Wash (hired to pilot Serenity, which was in the process of being fixed by a 'genius mechanic')
Kaylee (hired after she impressed Mal by knowing how to fix Serenity when the afore-mentioned 'genius mechanic', a kid named Bester, didn't)
Jayne (hired after he and two other thugs accosted Mal and Zoe in front of Serenity and tried to rob them)

While Inara was never " part of the crew " in proper standing, she was a traveling member on board the ship. Since we know the 'crew' was in tact in the pilot episode, 6 yrs after the war, when they were spotted by the Alliance's Dortmunder , while on the salvage job for Badger. Questions I have still....

Is Mal referring lovingly to Kaylee as his 'genius' mechanic, or is he being sarcastic in describing Bester ?

Was Bester ever on board w/ Inara, or did she show up after he was replace w/ Kaylee.

Exactly how long have Mal and Zoe been flying Serenity ?

Which leads me to another thought...... have Mal and Zoe been 'together' ever since the end of the war ? Did either ever serve time in an Alliance prison ? Or did they just look each other up, and renew their frienships?'

1 Mal. About 5 years back.
2 Zoe. About 5 years back.
3 Bester.
4 Wash. More than a year ago, they got married after a year together.
5 Kaylee replaces Bester.
6 Jayne. perhaps a year before OMR.
7 Inara. Perhaps 8 months before TTJ or a year before BW.
8 Book.
9 Simon.
10 River.

Jayne joining is mentioned in the line "not the man I met a year ago" in OMR.
Inara says in Bushwacked she's been aboard almost a year when Commander asks.
When Inara says she won't be servicing crew, I assumed she specifically meant Jayne. Wash was married, she was talking to Mal, Jayne was the only man left.
Jayne/Inara sequence could be interpreted either way - was that the primary part of the posed question?
