Likes to mess with stuffs.

I'm really excited now. I can somewhat see where Joss wants to go with Firefly.

Joss said it himself, "Firefly is basically Stagecoach." He is probably referring to the legendary John Ford classic staring John Wayne. It's been ages since I've seen it (more like 15+ years).

Stagecoach is probably one of the most thematically rich Western ever made, filled with complicated characters from different classes who must all interact with one another. This isn't just some bang bang shoot'em up adventure on the high plains. This is an adventure of another sort, deep in substance and filled with tales of morality and nobility.

And that little comment Joss made about the whore, don't get the wrong idea about her. In Stagecoach she's one of the most honorable and selfless person there is.

Hmmm...come to think of it, I wonder if Mal and Inara is gonna hook up.

Here's a transcript of the interview bit called "Action and a Whore"

Hi, welcome to the interweb.

Firefly. A lot of people are asking me, you know, what exactly is Firefly? It's a tv show you morons! Everbody knew that. It's a science fiction-western-drama-action-comedy-hybrid, much like all of the shows I do. It's something I haven't seen on tv for a awhile. I'm not sure if I've ever seen all of the elments in place. It's got a great deal of action and a great deal, obviously, of cool space ships, and all of the things that I love in science fiction. But actually it's just really Stagecoach. It's using a nice compelling setting, a journey. In this case, hopefully a very loooong journey. To learn about people, and see thier interactions, to see what makes them tick, and learn about society, and life and what it all means, but with action and a whore!

MICHIZURE

(Undead thread alert! It lives...)

I recently read a review which quoted Mr. Whedon as saying Firefly was basically "Stagecoach in space," so I thought I'd dig up the original.

Not only is it a great film in its own right, but there appears to be a homage to it in the TV episode "Serenity":

In Stagecoach, one of the passengers is a mousy little man named Peacock, who is a whiskey "drummer" (salesman). Everyone who meets him calls him "Reverend," however. He keeps having to correct them, saying, "I'm not a minister."

Sound a little familiar?

Together with Wash's "Hang on, Travellers!" this makes two references to sources of inspiration. Has anyone spotted any others?
