Last Monday Summer was on the show "Big Bang Theory" playing, well Summer. It was pretty funny to see her play herself. Firefly was mentioned on the show. Getting the word out any way we can.

I think there was an interview a few days ago that said she was kind of parody-ing herself. I think she she says that she hopes she's a bit more approachable than her "Summer" character.

HISTORY

My impression of Summer at Creation Con 2008 is that she is not very approachable. She seems comfortable with fans within very organized parameters, such as the few seconds of photo shoots--though a request by one costumed Browncoat for her to pose as if killing him with her brain flustered and disturbed her [he had great posed shots with Jewel, Adam, and Gina]. She seemed unable to relax and be engaged with the fans, which I found true at the autograph signing as well.
Jewel seemed also a bit reticent around fans outside scheduled appearances. I happened to be checking email in the lobby when she arrived, and she seemed to desire to be unrecognized as she moved to a dark and empty part of the lobby while her husband checked them in. I respected her privacy. However, I know Jewell has graciously given of her time to the Vancouver Can't Stop the Serenity Screenings each year. So maybe it was just jet lag.
Both Jewell and Summer's on-stage Q&A were merely "ask me questions." Which was fine, as Ron Glass did the same. Ron seemed most comfortable with this (you just can't help but love his laugh). Jewell was also cool and seemed to have fun. Summer compartively seemed like a fish in a bowl--less engaged and comfortable...hoping, and disappointed, that Adam wasn't behind the curtain to help her.
It was an interesting study in contrasts. Gina came prepared and truly seemed to enjoy engaging with fans at her scheduled appearances.
Adam, would actively seek us out and be with fans in the bar, or goof around.

Thus, the Big Bang Theory episode seemed to not parody as much as portray Ms Summer Glau somewhat realistically (admittedly per my limited experience): reticent, even nervous, of fans outside of scheduled strictly controlled appearances, but still desiring to be pleasant to fans--as long as we do not vary from the script or approach too closely. [In BBT, her scripted comment after the mention of Firefly was "You're not one of those...." (strange nerd geeks)].

She reminds me of my daughter. She is very sweet and desires to be giving, but easily made uncomfortable and unsure.
I suspect this may change with time and more acting experiences.
But I somehow don't ever see Summer sharing a drink with fans at "The Daily Grill" hotel bar/restaurant as Adam did.

Respectfully,
History

Well Summer's considerably younger than the rest of the cast with far less experience and it's also been mentioned she's very shy so that's probably what is going on... as for wanting Adam there it's obvious he's everyones on set " dad" ( watch D*C 07 when Jewel struggles to open her Snapple for a moment and hands it to Adam to open for her.
Adam's been doing this for 20 some odd year as has Ron. They're a lot more practiced at dealing with fan interactions

I think Summer's a great straight man - in Firefly, Terminator and this, she plays it as though there's nothing funny about the scenario whatsoever, which makes it all the more amusing for the audience.

Personally, I think actors can have a pretty tough time of it, particularly at things like conventions where instead of the odd person in the street recognises them, there are hundreds. Nathan has talked about not really wanting to be hassled when going from A to B. Summer might be more sensitive, especially as she's not had quite the same set of endless auditions and casting calls that the others did (even though Jewel is younger than Summer, she's been acting since she was 9) which is pretty good preparation for being asked random, bizarre or plain banal questions.

And poor Dr Smoot, his cameo completely overshadowed. Oh well.

not only that but of all our BDH Summer's the most likely to encounter Walowitcz like jerks who hit on her endlessly and that's likely to have put her off considerably

Summer seems to me to be the shy type, not very comfortable around large crowds (really strangers)who may sometimes frighten her depending upon their behavior.

I agree. Plus, as someone else posted above, she doesn't have as much experience as the others. She seems very accomodating otherwise.

I liked her appearence on BBT. I think that her reaction to Raj was more typical of how she would react to that type of approach than the one Wolowitz did. Just my observation from video of her public appearences.

Good mention of her role in Firefly. Hopefully that will translate into more Browncoats as people will look up the show online. Surpised that both Terminator and FF were mentioned on CBS, but it fits that premise of the situation.

I agree. Though I was gonna come out with a little psycho-babble about how some folks are better at setting boundaries than others, and when you're bad at setting boundaries for yourself (basically I mean telling people "no"), you can spend a lot of time getting run over and put upon. So a poor boundary-setter might find themselves sending out unconscious, unexamined vibes of blanket f**k-off-ness to fans, well-wishers, and other unvetted strangers. I have unfortunate (and very low profile) experience in this area. Good thing I'm not a celebrity.

You make a very good point about the experience of the celebrity in dealing with...celebrity. Not only does Adam have a mess of experience, but...I think it's been a good long time since he had a problem telling someone - firmly and perhaps politely - "no".

I wish circumstances had allowed for Summer's role in TBBT to be a little...more. I realize from a business point of view her cameo was just a promotional tool for T:TSCC, and with her schedule (which probably includes many opportunities to say "no"), she likely doesn't have much time to devote to one-off guest-appearance roles.

But any Summer is better than no Summer. Or that's my story, anyway, and I'm stickin' to it!

ETA: A little parenthetical froo-froo.

It was like that when we got here!
