This is for those of you who, like me, like to try to be the ubergeek of the crowd.

For those of you with PocketPCs (specifically Windows Mobile 2003, but it works fine on Pocket PC 2002) and a DVD drive on your PC, there's this relatively new software called "DVD to PocketPC" by Makayama Software. I happened to see it mentioned in a Handango e-mail newsletter.

Just this week, I downloaded and purchased this software at the Handango online store. After the easy install, and after you enter your registration information that you receive, you basically just start right up. The first thing I ripped was my Firefly DVD set. Per the online manual, you can fit approximately 100 minutes of video on a 128 MB SD/MMC/CF card. Each Firefly episode came to between 54 MB and 56 MB. That came out to two Firefly episodes in my case with my 128 MB CF card on my iPaq 3835. Next will be my Stargate SG-1 DVDs.

All of the aforementioned calculations are based on ripping the DVDs using "Normal Quality" settings. You can also use the "High Quality" settings, but I'd wager that it would cut it down to one episode on my CF card (at least until I get a larger one ).

I watched an episode of Firefly last night while on the road with the wife (specifically "Jaynestown") and played the sound through her car stereo with one of those cassette adapters. Totally cool. Just a caveat though. If you are expecting DVD quality on that itty-bitty PPC screen, you will be disappointed. Also, if you use the itty-bitty speaker on your PPC, you will notice some distortion of the audio if the volume is set too high (so use headphones!) With those points factored in, I'm still damn glad I bought this software. Next time I'm on a long trip, I'll settle back with a couple of episodes of SG-1 and Firefly to pass the time.

Wow, that on my 2.2GB microdrive and my CF card sleeve, I can fit the entire DVD set and still have plenty of room to spare! Woohoo!

Hmmm... Gotta get me one of those...

Uh, yeah, you'll easily get the whole run of Firefly, plus about a season and a half of SG-1, I'd bet

One question, how fast will it eat through the iPaq battery? I mean I generally get about three hours continuous use before the battery is gone. How much will that cut it by?

The CF sleeve has an extra battery on it. That's extra juice for the entire system, not just to power the cards with. But the microdrive does suck up the battery fairly well within about 5-6 hours of continuous use. But that's good enough for a cross country flight...
