TiVo - another promotional tool?

Pardon me if anyone's already suggested this, but to those of you with TiVo...

We should set up wishlists to automatically record anything sci-fi named Firefly, and anything with the actors from Firefly in it (Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Ron Glass, etc etc).

TiVo provides viewing/recording statistics to the networks and such. By listing all those things, even though we may not see Firefly reruns any time soon, and even if we don't watch what they record for the actors, will 1) Show a demonstrably maintained interest in the series (Sci-Fi channel or whomever intersted in the reruns might look there), and 2) raise the TVQ of the actors. Basically, it makes the old show look more valuable to programmers and such.

Firefly was the most commonly added 'season pass' for the season in which it aired, so I know there've got to be other fans with TiVo setups. Get to wishlistin'!

I have had my tivo set to tape anything with firefly in the title in the sci-fi catagory since they cancelled it, in the hopes that someone would pick it up, or that fox would play the unaired eps in some random time slot to fill up some space... never took it off, and i keep it on the #1 slot of my season pass manager... kind of a sad reminder for me whenever i go into tht screen...

anyway, not a half bad idea... tivo definately tracks these things, but I am unsure how much the networks pay attention... seems like most tivo watchers are probably not network tv's target audience, as we don't watch commercials.

PS just a thought, but I imagine that Fireflys #1 season pass ranking is a good indicater of not only how good it was, but what a lousey time slot it was in. (I don't watch anything live, and add all shows to my season pass list, but I imagine that there are those who only record shows they wont be around to see live).

You're not the only one. With as often as shows get moved around the schedule, it's the only way to make sure that you actually get the show.
My season pass finds every episode, even when my local affiliate bumps it for a college basketball game and runs the episode at 2:15 am.

Well, they weren't paying attention when Firefly was airing, but they're starting to check it out more and more. There's been a lot of coverage for the stats from the news lately, particularly after the Janet Jackson moment.

I used to work in ratings research, and I know that no one ever likes the Nielsen ratings... they're just too unreliable. TiVo can keep track of which commercials you watch and what shows you watch and when... so it's definite viewers. Even if TiVo viewers skip all the commercials (a point I'd dispute), it's a good indicator of how much people like a given program.

Secondly, right now we're trying to promote a movie... and the financiers of a movie wouldn't care whether people watched the commericials or not, so long as there's a definable interest in the show. With a lot of these things, the sales pitch comes down to 1) a proven premise that audiences will like (so in this case they would have to show that audiences liked the TV show), 2) talent behind the production, be a good script, a popular actor, etc. We can help 'prove' these elements by doing lots of little things, like buying the DVDs, pressing the case online and to the studios, and here, by showing that the TV show and the talent associated with it still draw interest.

I'v only had TIVO for 2 months and I wish I had it years ago. I saw a recent thing on Angel's 100th episode on my Tivo... i think i'll play that one several times. And i do have Angel and Buffy on my Season Pass.
