Let's throw Joss Whedon and Allan Ball into a locked room. What would we get?

Would we get the best TV series ever or would we get WWIII?

I don't know if they even know each other but wouldn't it be fun to lock both of them in a room for a week with paper, pens, computers to communicate with their writing staffs and see what results?

I'm a die hard Firefly/Serenity/Dr. Horrible fan, lukewarm Buffy and a so so Dollhouse fan. I love Joss' use of character, foreshadowing and long arcs.

I loved Allan Ball's "Six Feet Under" for the first 3 seasons and I'm totally in love with "True Blood". Allan uses lots of the same techniques as Joss. And they are both awesome directors and both pick fantastic actors (mostly unknowns to most TV watchers), writing and technical staff.

I have no idea what would come of this experiment but wouldn't it be interesting?

Well, the only things I've seen by Alan Ball are American Beauty and a few eps of True Blood. Wasn't that thrilled with either, so I'm not sure if I'd really want to lock them in a room together to collaborate O_o

Oh absolutely. I would give anything to be the fly on the wall for that scenario. Also, Joss with Kevin Smith I think would be every geek's wet dream. Joss is my dream guest for an episode of SModcast, the podcast Kevin does with his producer Scott Mosier. He usually sticks to either family or friends (He says Ben Affleck is too inside the Hollywood machine to do a SMod, which is a shame because the comraderie between them is like Joss with Nathan Fillion. It's just infectious.) if he can't do one with Scott. But I would love to see or hear the dynamic between a famous atheist like Joss and a hardcore believer in God like Kevin. If you think about it, DOGMA is pretty much what BUFFY would be like if Joss believed in God.

I'm actually a bigger fan of Alan Ball than I am of Whedon. There's stuff in TRUE BLOOD that Joss wouldn't even consider for BUFFY. And I think Joss is incapable of doing something that's just normal people living normal lives and finding the extraordinary within it that Alan's made a career out of.

You only liked the first three seasons? I'll admit that season 4 may have meandered a bit. But I absolutely loved season 5. The finale for SIX FEET UNDER is still my gold standard that I compare every series finale to. I'd especially like to hear Joss's take on SIX FEET UNDER and Alan's take on "The Body". They're both such profound statements about death and how people react and respond to it. And 6FT is pretty much "The Body" stretched out over 50 odd episodes and not lose a single moment of impact.

I think they could initially clash, but in the end they'd probably be good friends. They've both worked in the salt mines of a network sitcom writing staff and had some success in film but bigger success in TV, although I like to think of Alan as a movie guy that works in TV, as opposed to Joss whose a TV guy who occasionally does film. Also, Joss is very much a genre guy while Alan has an outsider's perspective on genre TV, which I think gives him the advantage in approaching things in a fresh and new way.
