DREAMTROVE

Okay, I give up, how was this done?

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

HARDCOPY

I live like an hour from there and damnit that was shiny. Basically there was no tricks that I can see, they just did an awesome job. One long camera shot.

THESOMNAMBULIST

That was wonderful Dreamtrove. I do love things like this.

I can only guess at how it may have been done. I'd imagine good old fashioned practical effects and a great deal of planning. I think I saw a couple of 'whip cuts' but it's hard to tell watching over the internet. However the takes are long and incredibly well co-ordinated. Multiple camera rigs as well as a steadycam operator I'd imagine....
Whatever, however.... It's brilliant.

At first I thought this might be a Michel Gondry or Spike Jonze video, it would seem like their kind of thing, but no it's Rob Bliss. Good on him.

The camera sometimes is rolling down the street, and is sometimes flying. I think there's a camera handover, but it looks like it's all one shot.

They did a great job. Grand Rapids did themselves proud.

MOOSE

Eh, they probably had lots of time to practice since they're all out of work in that dying city...

Seriously, they did a incredible job. It really looks like one steadicam operator and one long take to my untrained eye.

You can catch glimpses of the camera vehicle and cameraman in window reflections. It looks like some sorta 6 wheel Cushman type cart. I think the "rolling" is the cameraman either kneeling or sitting and the "flying" is standing up. I noticed two times the cameraman was definitely off the cart, the first when they were on the bridge with the dancers and then again when they get onto the helicopter (duh). Both times there's a glimpse of the camera vehicle. There might be another time or two when the cameraman is on foot, but I'm not sure.

Oh, and one of the marching band members drops his drum.

That was a great way for the city to tell Newsweek to take their article and shove it.
