Okay, so, here's a question that just hit me.

I was watching "Objects" the other night, with my sister, and during River's weird ESP-like walk through the ship, my sister asked me a question, which I now pose to you all.

When River comes across Simon and Kaylee, Kaylee is sitting with her feet confortably laying across Simon's lap. The two of them seem to be very comfortable with each other, him telling the story about his school days, her giggling like a little girl.

Coupled with the very end of "The Message" where we see her take Simon's hand outside, my sister's question was, are we to believe that, perhaps off camera in the Fireverse, Simon and Kaylee have kinda started to maybe decide to pursue something together? Not totally there yet, but more than a simple bumbling attempt at a date in the freak show?

Hhhmmmmmm.....

Well, personally (since I guess I can't answer for anyone else ) I think that they both *want* something to happen, and they're getting closer as friends all the time, but I don't think they've kissed yet. I think they both want to, but - well, there's all the bumbling that you mentioned, for one. I think Kaylee wants Simon to make the move and Simon is sort of hesitant to... well, I'm not sure if he's worried about taking it too fast, or if he's just nervous, or if he's worried about disappointing her, of if his reservations are just because every time he *tries* to get closer to her, he says something dumb and messes it up and she gets mad at him. I think their relationship is really cute. I think they *will* kiss. Maybe in the movie . In The Message, Simon was in the doghouse for most of the episode, since he said his Stupid Thing really early on. I think taking his hand was just showing that when it comes down to the difficult times, he's still the one she wants to turn to for comfort. But I loved when she did that, it was so sweet.

I guess I'm blathering a bit. I'm just a big fan of the Kaylee/Simon relationship. I'm pulling for them!

I've only seen some of the episodes once though (I'm on my second trip through the entire series... though I've seen Jaynestown and Objects in Space a few times now ) and I'm sure that more seasoned viewers will have better insight than a new fan like me.

I tend to think that they're just being cute... enjoying that beginning of a relationship, when will he kiss me thing... how sweet they are.

I think all of Simon's bumblings are just when he concentrates on what he is trying to say. Usually before he says the wrong thing, you see him pause to think about what he says. When they are most comfortable together is when they aren't paying attention to what they are doing. case in point, both Simon and Kaylee are saddened by the death in the end of The Message.

I've pondered that very thing. They do seem rather intimate during that scene and I believe she even indicates that it would not be difficult to picture him nekkid.

Actually Kaylee says that she finds it pretty hard to picture Simon nekkid, after that she giggles and nudges his face with her foot...how cute, she's teasing him for being a prude. :D

Hmmm, good points but I don't think something as explosive as a Kaylee-Simon hookup would be something that Joss'd pull offscreen. Seems like it'd be a pivotal moment in their relationship and not something that could be hand waved over.

But that's just my assesment.

I'm so glad that you said this. Simon's "Stupid Thing". I must be the only one who thinks that there is really only one time where Kaylee legitimately gets upset with Simon. To me, it was in Safe with his lu su comment, you don't insult Serenity infront of Kaylee and get away with it. Everything else though just looks like Kaylee being one of those silly little girls who imagines insults because things aren't going the way she wants them to. She and Simon don't come from the same society and she can't expect him to abide by the blunt courtship rules the she is used to.

I agree, insulting Serenity was the only one that really crossed the line with her. Sometimes in those scenes - I *KNOW* he says the wrong thing, but it's pretty obvious that he doesn't mean it the way it came out of his mouth and I think "Kaylee, c'mon. Why are you being so senstive? I mean, he's hot, and he clearly fancies you... and plus, he's *hot*."

Actually, in Jaynestown, I'm sure what he meant when he said "Not with *Kaylee*!" was "Mal! Look, I know she's like a little sister to you, but I didn't touch her - I swear! Don't punch my face!" I think being a big brother himself, he sees the big brother instinct Mal has for Kaylee really easily. Not that it helped, as he ended up getting his face punched anyway

In Safe, Simon was rude. But, I think, Kaylee should have realized how preoccuppied Simon was with looking after River.

Watching Jaynestown again after seeing Out of Gas puts the scene with Mal, Simon and Kaylee in a new light . Knowing the what the situation was when Mal first met Kaylee makes Mal's response to Simon's assurances even funnier.
