Hi all,

A dear friend of mine who is part of the SavingAngel campaign attended the Saturn Awards (to hand over a $13,000 donation to the ICRC for Joss on behalf of AtS fans). I'm posting her report here because of the Firefly mentions:

We [she and Joss] had a nice little chat before the awards, and he said how much the fans overwhelm him with how incredible they are. That seems to be the word most used - overwhelming.

I didn't discuss spoilers, or future stuff - it wasn't the time or place, and I stayed within what I was there to do. I didn't wanna "fangirl" out, either

He is really a very sweet guy.

Honestly, it STILL is a lot of a blur in my head. I remember the emotions, but not the exact details! I was so proud and clapped my hands sore when Ats and JM and Amy won - I was in the press room when DB won. Joss was very funny in his acceptance speeches - his theme was "it was so great doing this, shame the show's cancelled" for both firefly and angel, and it got laughs and "awwwws" - there was a producer from Lucasfilms at my table who kept leaning over asking me "They cancelled Firefly? The cancelled Angel? Are they idiots?" to which I could only answer "yes, they are!"

Our table had a nice discussion about the state of TV and lack of quality programming. It was a really neat event to be at because everyone there loved genre programming, and wants to see it succeed. The feeling is kind of strange, because there is so much great work being done, but it's always a struggle to GET it made, because of execs. In his Firefly acceptance speech, Joss said "this show is about a small group of rebels fighting a corrupt bureaucratic corporation - sound familiar to anyone?" and everyone laughed and sighed at the same time, and it got applause. You really get the feeling that these people fight uphill battles to bring us the kind of shows and movies we WANT to see - even when they get them made, they're encouraged to drop plot and add special effects and fights. *sigh*

But really, overall, just so wonderful. The presentation, the atmostphere, the creativity present there. FABulous and, yes, overwhelming.

Thanks for all the info. You must have had a blast! I can't help but wonder why we are bombarded with awards shows on television that have become boring and predictable, but an awards ceremony concerning this genre is overlooked. A show that would actually be interesting and fun!
I would have LOVED to see this ceremony televised or at least broadcast after-the-fact.

Does no network "get it"?

I didn't get to go *pout* but Lisa my Angel mate did, she is part of the SavingAngel campaign.

She had a wonderful time though she was nervous about handing over the check.

She said Joss was very sweet and actually choked up about and listed all the charities that fans of AtS, Buffy and FF had helped contribute to.

The atmosphere was very pro Angel and Firefly, with lots of industry in jokes about the struggles of the makers and shapers of TV to keep their projects going in the face of reality tv and knee jerk network decisions.

That is so awesome.

It's amazing the creative people who are chomping at the bit to produce intelligent and entertaining television and yet networks play to the lowest common denominator and produce raunchy "reality" shows and more cops and lawyer shows than you can shake a stick at. Do you think the "fans" of those type shows would raise money for deserving charities in the name of Survivor or High School Reunion. I think not.

I've never understood the aversion networks and studios have to sci-fi/fantasy. If it's truly a "business" as they use as their excuse to cancel quality shows with loyal fans, you would think they would see the profitability in keeping these quality shows on the air.
I'm happy and proud to hear Joss Wedon is such a nice person considering what he battles in his industry to get his stories told.
