I really enjoyed Firefly but couldn't help but think I'd seen bits of pieces of it in other mediums. I'm not saying this is bad at all. I personally think it's OK when you borrow stuff, as long as what you create is something different in the end and I think Firefly really is different in the live-action sci-fi show sense.

Anyway, I'd like to hear what other people think about this. I haven't been into Anime for a long time... a long-enough time that when I watched that stuff we still called it "Japanimation" but Cowboy Beebop has always held my interest because it was so original. Firefly seems to borrow some of these elements. Instead of bounty-hunters, the folks in Firefly are...well... criminals. But the comeraderie and conflict are always the same. And some of the humorus aspects are same too. Then there is the ship they all fly in. If you've ever seen Cowboy Beebop, you'll know what I'm talking about. Now they only need to add "Ein", the Corgie dog. :)

The second thing I noticed is that the "state of the galaxy" in show is similar to Independence War. I only played the demo about 3 years ago but I remember there being an Alliance or Confederation that you work for but you start working for people on the other side and end up being a "freedom fighter" of sorts after doing crime and pulling "heists".

Lastly, and this is more of an "easter-egg" if anything, is that two of the ships we see in one scene---where we're looking down on some space platform orbiting the moon and ships are whizzing by--looks just like the main ship you use in the game, Independence War. I thought that was interesting. I think it'd be cool if we found out that this was an homage.

Would be interested to hear what you folks all think.

So the Japanese invented the Old West and space exploration? People get so caught up in japan animation and scream OMG, they are stealing their ideas. Oh, Please.. This isn't directed at you but the general consensus.

That's nothing, you should see what they're saying at http://slashdot.org They're convinced that it's a complete rip off of Cowboy Beebop and a few other anime.

Of course they also think Firefly sucks ("Dark Angel was cancelled for this?") and that this site is a Fox plant ("What kind of fan site appears before the pilot airs?"). The best one I read was the geek loser who said that the show sucks because they use guns, and what kind of sci-fi show would use weapons that fired bullets.

*sigh*

Isn't everything ever created a rip-off of The Odyssey anyway?

Slashdotters need to heed these words: "Just repeat to yourself, 'It's just a show, I should really just relax.'"

REDAG

I went through my tape and took a look. The traffic at Nisska's base was indeed reminiscient of Independence War ships. However, it appears it was limited to gross structure, and given the small size of Serenity, those ships had to be much smaller than a corvette, much less a patcom.

The one I got the best look at looked a bit more like the style of the corvettes and patcoms in Independence War 2, but I still think there were major structural differences.

Maybe we'll get a better look sometime.

About Cowboy Bebop - that's like saying CowBe is a ripoff of Trigun, because the latter came first, and they're both westerns-in-the-future-in-outer-space. And I've never heard anyone say that, because even though the premise is similar, the plots are totally different.

Come to think about it, a lot of anime are more or less ripoffs of older anime, if you think in that kind of over-anal way. All magical girl, giant robot, etc series are sort of similar, and have similar elements. And how many Pokeman ripoffs are there? Come on.

Anime fans never complain about that though, because its other anime so its Ok. People seem more offended when its a Western series using the same elements.

Firefly's really not a ripoff of Cowboy Bebop though, at least as far as I've seen. I've watch CowBe a gazillion times, and the only thing remotely similar between the two is the western-in-space. That's been done before in the US anyway. (Anyone remember the movie Oblivion? God, thats a bad movie. My Dad likes crap like that. )

Thought I'd put my two cents in. Sorry if I'm incoherent. There's a fly buzzing around me, and I can't concentrate on anything but it.

Think about this, though: Why haven't you ever heard anyone say that? If this situations are so alike, you shouldn't be seeing this many people insisting that Joss is copying.

I think the difference is that with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun, the similarities end there. Cowboy Bebop, however, actually seems like kind of a Joss Whedon-y kind of show anyway. The fact that the shows have some similarities is much more likely attributable to great minds thinking alike than one copying the other.

Then again, I still have no idea what those Outlaw Star people are on about.

Side note: This is creepy. I feel like I'm replying to myself. Oh well, I knew somebody else would take this avatar eventually. (Heh. Poor River.) I guess I'll have to go find me a new one.

Again, *I* believe its because most anime fans aren't as defensive about anime ripping off other anime than they are about western-made programs doing the same.

Of course, thats jsut my opinion and you're certainly welcome to yours.

Not nessecerily. CowBe and Trigun both have the hero trying to escape/ignore his past, the feisty main female who tries to avoid loving the hero but can't, and so forth. All are common anime themes, and actually, common themes in a lot of shows/books/movies.

See, this I agree with you on. Great minds thinking alike again, right?

Eh. I've never seen Outlaw Star, so I can't comment on that.

You could be River 1, and I could be River 2. Its good to share!

Hey, maybe someone'll make different avatars of the characters in the future so we could have *different* Rivers. (I'd do it myself, but I'm a little lazy. Shhh! Don't tell anyone! )

Wow, I certainly screwed up the html on that one, didn't I?

Can I technically be with stupid, if I'm the stupid one?

Maybe stupid is one of my multiple personalities!

Fly-in-room update: The little won't freaking stay still so I can kill him. Grrr.
