Well, having read Alan's putative post re: fan pre-responses to "I, Robot," I felt obligated to watch HBO's First Look, to see if I could get a sense of the film at all. It was hard to get a good sense based on a 15 minute segment, but there was some promising stuff--namely, the fact that they put some real effort into imagining the future, and didn't just through in any cool bit of futuristic FX that came to mind. They seemed intent on creating a "realistic" feeling future society that is plausible in 35 years. That gives me some hope.

Also, there was some discussion of not letting the FX distract from the main focus on robots. Of course, at the same time, Will Smith talked about how this is the biggest FX film he's ever done--and he's done some real biggies. Lots of green screen and all that. So it's hard to know how much the story will drive the FX versus the FX driving the story.

There were a few good minutes of screen time, interviewing Alan and showing him at work in his green suit (their equivalent of what Andy Serkis wore when he created Gollum). I definitely plan to go to see Alan's performance, if nothing else, as it's clear that this will be a very different role for him than Wash, or his characters in "A Knight's Tale" and "Dodgeball."

Yeah, I here he plays a robot? Is he doing it in makeup/motion capture (say, like Gollum) or is he doing it via voiceover?

He said in the interview that they were using the same technology that they used to create Gollum, and he did a lot of walking around in a tight lime green lycra suit (poor guy), so I guess it's a la Gollum. This means we'll see his performance and hear his voice, but not see his face (although the animators were using his facial expressions). Should be interesting!
