Second Chances

Firefly star Adam Baldwin gives Karen Stoddard-Hayes a preview of the sci-fi Western’s movie revival, Serenity.

Adam Baldwin is looking forward to boarding the Serenity once again. “I am so excited, I cannot wait!” says Baldwin, who will reprise his role as soldier of fortune Jayne Cobb in Serenity, the upcoming big-screen revival of Joss Whedon’s
short-lived sci-fi Western series Firefly. “I don’t even think I work the first day, and it’s out in the desert somewhere, but you know I’m going to be standing right there when they make that first clapperboard go, ‘Action!’ We’re all going to be like, ‘Can you believe we’re actually standing here?’”

Set a year after the Firefly TV show, Serenity continues the adventures of Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and the crew of the eponymous Firefly-class freighter. The film is being brought to the screen by writer-director Whedon
and promises to take the saga to a completely new level.

“It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read,” agrees Baldwin. “All I can say is that it will add on to what everyone has seen from the series and it will introduce the world to people who haven’t seen it before in a wonderful way. It’s
really action-packed, but very character driven. It has everything that people would expect from Joss’s creative writing.”

Produced by Universal Pictures and budgeted at around $40 million, Serenity will boast special effects from Emmy award-winning FX company Zoic Studios and all-new sets and make-up designs.

“I’ve seen some of the drawings and the models they have for the movie, and as cool as it was on the TV show, it’s even slicker and cooler,” reveals Baldwin. “There’s going to me more depth – it’s just going to be feature film quality. There’s going to be more eye candy.”

Baldwin portrayed Jayne in Firefly as a “selfish guy” who was driven by “pure capitalism,” and hopes to develop the character in new and surprising ways in Serenity. “At this point I’m just trying to figure out what the best approach
for him in the movie is,” he admits. “I’m probably going to focus mostly on the physical stuff. As an actor and as a character, I found the more selfish I played him, the better it worked.”

Universal Pictures hopes that Serenity will be the first in a series of Firefly-inspired movies, and its agreement with Whedon actually forbids the show from returning to TV for the next few years. But can a movie adaptation of a
cancelled TV show really be successful? Adam Baldwin pauses thoughtfully before answering the big question.

“I’m a big believer that the movie is the star these days,” he replies. “Yes, there are certainly some great big actors out there who can open a movie, but if the movie’s not good, it’s not going to sustain itself and have legs. All I know is, the script is fantastic. It’s up to us to put it on screen, and I’m confident that’s what we’ll do. And the rest of it is up
to the ad campaign and luck, and people coming to see it. That’s out of my hands.”

“Me, what can I do? Make Jayne as great as he is!”

Firefly begins shooting in June and is scheduled for worldwide release in 2005.

When was this interview w/ Adam done? The movie started shooting back in the first part of June & this was obviously done prior to the beginning of filming.

Lead in time on magazines tends to be a few months. Subtract three months from now as the magazine was just purchased a few days ago (Dreamwatch is not tagged on a monthly basis, as a January, February, etc. issue, it is only numbered), that puts us in back in May. Subtract another month or two on speculation, as the magazine is the domestic version of Dreamwatch which is primarily published in the UK, and there might be a bit more lag time in there.

There is nothing really stopping simultanous publication on both sides of the Atlantic though, and some magazines have a lead time of as much as four to six months. So I would guess in March or April.

This is the first I've heard the movie will take place a year after the series ended.
I still thought it was six months after the last episode.

SUPERFLY

It's good to know that there's some talk going on outside of Firefly circles this early in the game. I just know in my little heart the movie is going to be great! My worst fear is, however, that Universal won't pour the money into advertising and getting the rest of the population to know the movie's comming out.

Hell, most people I know never even knew the show existed. Once I got 'em hooked, they were syched about the movie, but the sure didn't know about that one either.

I'd really love to see these guys do interviews and write articles geared towards hooking new people who don't know anything about the series. If all they say is "it's bigger and better than the show," but no one has heard about the show, well, that just won't peak their interest will it?

Sigh, maybe as we get closer the the release date. I just wish they'd start sooner. All those people out there... they'd just love the show and the movie. I know it. But they have to know it's out there don't they? They've got to be sucked in.
