Has anyone any idea what Joss has in mind for the music for the movie.

Listening to bbc radio 3 prom. concert this afternoon, I discovered a group called The Silk Road Ensemble. Which specialise in a mixture of enthnic music. Blending it together but still being about to tell what it is.

I think it would be perfect, it was a sort of East/West fusion, both were there, they went well together, but you could still spot the influences. Sort of celtic/gypsy strings with chinese music with baroque/madrigal type bits. And since bluegrass "western" twang music has celtic/baroque roots, I am pretty sure they could make that work with the chinese influence.

There was some Mongolian warbling also, which while impressive, I am not sure that would fit.

The "I want to see Serenity make $$$$$$" part of me would love an Oh-Brother-esq soundtrack with eastern chimy undertones. Something pretty much commercial as fuck.

The rest of me would like something really understated - the closest thing I can think to describe what I'd like would be Beck's last album Seachange. It has a mood.

Bottom line - No John Williams-esq shit.

I don't suppose anyone knows if Greg Edmonson is going to be tapped for composer again? I think it'd be appropriate to have him at the musical helm for Serenity, considering the great stuff he did for the show.

I asked this very question on the OB just last week and was assured by several regular posters that Greg is confirmed as score composer. Thing is, the IMDB cast list leaves out the music composer.

Anyone who thinks John Williams writes "cheesey shit" obviously doesn't understand music, and music theory, Ask any composer who is the best. They will all give you the same name. John Williams. When you say He writes shit, it shows your ignorance toward your knowledge of music. Pitty...

I don't understand music theory and I'm tone deaf, however, I can hear and that's the only qualification one needs.

That said, saying John Williams is shit, isn't cool. He's written some of the greatest theme music, if not the the greatest music ever. (Hyperbole, probably, but Beethoven would be writing movie themes if he was alive today)

The problem with Williams recently would be exhibits A and B the first two Harry Potter movies. Williams score is both not very good and it's slathered over every scene, it's like he's trying to drown out the movie. Which might not have been such a bad idea, considering the movies. I'd assume this is Chris Columbus' fault, not Williams, but his name gets on the music. If his stuff gets used badly, he gets the blame. It would have ruined the movie if the movie hadn't already been disappointing.

Oh, yes, forgot the point. I'd say Greg E. is the way to go, he did us proud once. Joss also understands the use of music better than the average movie maker, or his shows seem like he does.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you too. The "Star Wars" theme was instrumental in the success of Episode 4. It's one of the defining sounds of our culture.

The Star Wars theme is good as is the jurassic Park Theme and the Jaws theme -

my beef is that he writes music that sound like sound track music - could that be because he invented all the things that set music apart as being overtly sound track sounding? Yes. Is it cheesy to listen to? Yes.

I wrote those sentences just for the sake of putting John Williams and shit together (and look I just did it again) but what I meant was John Williams writes music that sounds like soundtrack music and that's not what I want in Serenity.

I agree with you that a John Williams type score would be completely wrong for Serenity. When most people hear John Williams they think Starwars, JP and Jaws. While Starwars being a good score (The Empire Strikes Back especially) his better works include but not limited to: Superman*, E.T., Saving Priite Ryan, The Patriot, Harry Potter I, II, II, (Amazing scores, you should like the third potter score becase it's less london symphony orchestra sounding) and Catch me if you can. Those are just some off the top of my head. My point being is that even if you don't *like* his stuff...You should appreciate the excellence of it. By no means should John Williams be called cheesy. That is all.

i think that the music should be a mix of country and rock. but the theme song for the show firefly should be put in there too.

Can anyone imagine the Star Wars credits rolling up without Williams theme?

I just think that different composers are suited to different genres and I think that with Firefly being in a genre all to itself - it literally is a Western in space as many theorists define the genre yet very few institutions actually follow (ok, I agree that made no sense) - I think it deserves a unique style of music all to itself, which it has. And a very good one at that.

John Williams is good, but overrated. The imperial march, awesome. Indy Jones, awesome. But not everything he's done is great. Some of it really sucked. I think Basil Poledouris beat the mortal shit out of him as far as composing goes. Check out the Red Dawn or Starship Troopers Soundtracks.

My problem with John Williams is the number of times I catch a classical piece on the radio, not knowing what it is (which isn't a rare occurence at all, honest) and think they are playing Star Wars or some such - to discover that Williams has been "inspired" by an existing piece. The most obvious one I heard recently was a Phantom Menace piece.

That's not to say I think that's true of all his music. He made Jaws what it was, he was instrumental in Indy, CEOT3 and the original trilogy, superman et al.

All composers seem to eventually start repeating themselves, the better ones (like Williams) just take a little longer - cf Hans Zimmer in recent times.

Currently listening to the princess + the warrior, a german soundtrack of a franka potente film by pale 3 which is great, but has the guitar sound from all over the mission impossible 2 soundtrack - the copyright years are exactly the same. Am I the only cynical one that notes that Hans Zimmer has recently taken to "co-working" with Klaus Badelt, and that Pirates of the Carribean was allegedly the work of over 10 composers?

Apologies for letting my reply send this thread off into a soundtrack rant...

I'm hoping they have the same composer; the music in Firefly was as good, if not better, than John Williams Star Wars work.

Not sure you'll get many to agree - good as some of the stuff in Firefly was, Star Wars, the original trilogy will, and should, be held up as one of the best soundtracks ever produced - one of the few that you link the music and film together in an instant.

No, you're not alone. Shame Badelt couldn't develop in his own right - he might have been more than a Zimmerclone, though I haven't heard evidence of it.

Does anyone know the circumstances behind Pirates? Was it a Badelt/Zimmer production because Zimmer was doing fifty other things at the same time? (cf. Williams on the 2nd Harry Potter film.) Was it Badelt's baby that Zimmer tinkered with? Or was it Zimmer saying, "Here, boy, try splashing out on your own"? I wonder.

Pirates was done by a group of 50 composers headed by Klaus Badelt. I felt that the music was appropriate for the movie and I enjoyed it. Hans Zimmer oversaw everything.

All I know is that I'm glad Greg is overseeing the music production. It wouldn't be firefly without him :: goes off in search of the ending peice to 'The Message' ::

I think its a product of the ever decreasing gap between the film being completed and delivered to cinema. LOTR was a welcome exception to this, and allowed Shore to create a fantastic soundtrack, something of the equivalent of Gattaca, one of my favourite soundtracks.
