A scene I'd like to see in Serenity

I've been running certain Jayne scenes in my head, various states of concern (Serenity, kneeling next to the window in a dark space so no one can see him, looking in and kinda rocking back and forth as Simon fixes Kaylee up), tenderness (Heart of Gold, spooner and brushing that girl's hair; the Message, excited about the hat and the letter from home, plus he sends money to his mom.), remorse (Ariel, in the med lab, you can see he's torn between going through and not going through with his betrayal after learning about what they did to River.) Anyway. I'd like to see a scene where Jayne actually puts himself between danger and the Tam siblings, or maybe just River. I'm not suggesting a Jayne-River connection. That actually strikes me as a little wrong. Jayne's a might too old for a 16/17 year old girl. Not too mention I don't think he could handle the whole crazy/psycho/psychic/kwisatz haderach thing River's got going on. But in conclusion: I'd like to see a Jayne save River scene. Maybe even a Jayne gets hurt protecting the Tams.

Jayne's a spooner. Y'know, where the girl is all snuggled up against the guy and they're on their sides, guy's arm around the girl? And in a later scene, Jayne is brushing the same girl's hair. Granted, yeah. She's a whore. But in the same token, sex is payment. No one said he had to be nice.

I suspect that if we ever see Jayne putting himself into the line of fire to save River and/or Simon, it will cause his death and will be part of a huge "redemption" of his character.

Might be more interesting to have Jayne get between danger and the Tams and live to deal with it. I get the feeling that Jayne might be a fundamentally decent chap. Being a mercenary so long has made him a bit rough around the edges, perhaps, but then flying on Mal's ship has softened him a bit, too. I think there are instances when you can see him struggling to not go too soft and cuddly. A bit of bravado.

So, seeing him willingly put himself in harm's way to protect Simon and River would be an interesting day, as it were.

I think it's the scene at the Heart of Gold just after Mal meets Rance. Mal's talking about running away and there's Jayne brushing the blonde's hair.
