On Saturday night at the World Science Fiction Convention, the Hugo Awards were presented. Firefly was nominated in the Dramatic Presentation Short Form category. Both "The Message" and "Heart of Gold" were nominated.

The competition was "Chosen" from BTVS (the ep where they decide to give all the potential Slayers power), "Rosetta" from Smallville (one of the Christopher Reeve eps), and Gollum's Acceptance Speech from the MTV Movie Awards (which is an easter egg on the extended TTT DVD set).

Clips were shown from each episode. For "HoG" they showed the encounter between Mal and Inara, just after she catches him coming out of Nandi's room, up to the point where she says she's appalled at Nandi's taste. For "Message" they showed the scene in the infirmary with Simon cutting open Tracey, up to the point where he screams.

And the winner was.... Gollum's Acceptance Speech. :P

In other news, Friday morning a discussion panel on "Serenity" was held. The crowd filled the room and flowed out into the hallway. The one new piece of news that came out is that there will be a novelization of the movie and it will be written by Keith DeCandido.

Saturday morning a discussion panel was held, led by several Browncoats. In the audience was a woman who said she was the script checker for 20th Century Fox Productions (the folks who produce the shows, NOT Fox TV the broadcasters). It's her job to clear legal issues, such as making sure naming a company "Blue Sun" isn't going to cause problems. She said that in the original version of the script for "Trash" it was going to be a Beatles album that they were trying to steal, but they ended up going with The Lassiter because they'd have had to get permission to show a Beatles album cover!

"The Message" came in second and "Heart of Gold" came in fourth. The Buffy ep was third and the Smallville ep was last.

That would be me. :) (I'm the woman from 20th Century Fox Television). I really enjoyed the discussion group at the Convention and hearing everyone's passion for the show. (And yes, I'm equally unhappy with the executives that cancelled the show).

I pulled my file for "Trash" and found a note that the script orginally refered to stealing the "Star of India" which was a famous gem (but not a real one that I could find)with an additional note that they would be changing the reference to a contemporary record album.

They looked into using "Rubber Soul" by the Beatles and there is a list of eight other albums they were interested in.

I wasn't surprised Gollum's acceptance speech
won, but I was suprised by how much. Sigh. It
was entertaining (but not for those with delicate
ears), but Hugo-worthy?

And next year, we make sure "Firefly" gets hour-
long panels in big rooms :) The half-hour format
is ridiculous.

All my life I wanted to be somebody. I guess I should have been more specific.

It looks like you won't have to worry about the 30 minute session returning for Interaction, the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention: the Programme Committee are planning on extending the standard time between program items from 60 minutes to 90 minutes which they note will automatically cut the number of possible program items by 1/3. This reduction will be somewhat offset by the extension of the programming into the evening hours (10AM-8:30PM). Yep, you read that URL right-- .uk --next year's WorldCon is taking place in Glasgow, Scotland, in early August. There is a North American Science Fiction Convention (or NASFiC) held whenever the WorldCon is outside the US. Next year it is Cascadia Con in Seattle, Washington, in early September. They haven't yet posted a program idea suggestion form for Interaction but this is the one for Cascadia Con:

I might suggest that good ideas would involve broad interest SF themes addressed in Firefly. There was quite a good panel at WorldCon this year that compared space-based SF to the Naval Fiction genre (think C.S.Forester and Patrick O'Brien plus submarine warfare fiction). Perhaps a discussion of classic Western themes in SF stories would work. Be sure to elaborate or give examples for any suggestions you submit. The better thought out the suggestion the more likely it will be to get taken seriously.

So, if you want more Firefly panels at either convention, speak up now in the planning stage and participate in the process. Volunteering is a good way to be heard, too.

I think I'll have to turn in my researchers credentials :) When I went looking for it, all I turned up was the Star of Africa. The magic word in the search was sapphire. Without that, google didn't turn it up.

I have a very goofy job (which I love).

Worldcon's panels were 1 hour. Or was it DragonCon that had 1/2 hour panels?

Regarding quoting music lyrics, the answer is yes and no. I confess I'm really weak on music lyrics unless it's really famous. The music department gets into it a little more than the legal department does but if it's short and not a really famous unique line (like "I am the Walrus") it's usually okay (as long as it isn't sung). If anything is sung, then the show does have to license the music. If it's longer than a short phrase usually permission has to be acquired as well.
