Firefly DVDs in Libraries

Yea me! My donation of a set of Firefly DVDs is now (well, in 3 days anyway) available in the Tempe, AZ Public Library. Here's the shiny catalog entry:

I'm posting this in the hope of encouraging others to go forth and do likewise. People browse the library DVDs to find new and interesting things they may have missed, and since it's free, they have more of a tendency to take a chance on things they might not spend money on at Blockbuster. So if you can, why not make sure your own local library has a set. It's kind of like having a Shindig with the whole city.

Yeah, and if wishes were horses we'd all be eatin' steak.

Alrighty, I've said this before, and now I'm gonna say it again.

You can (usually) get Firefly into your local library at NO COST TO YOURSELF.

Step 1) Go the the library.
2) Go to the reference desk and say "Excuse me, do you have a copy of the Firefly DVDs?"
3) They will say one of two things a) "No." or b) "No, but would you like to fill out a request for order form?"
4) If you get responce a) Say that you'd like to request that Firefly be ordered for the library. If you get responce b) move on to step 5.
5) Fill out the request for order form, and hand it back to the librarian.

Ok, here's where it gets kinda iffy. The little slip goes up to the powers that be who decide if its the kind of thing they want for the library. BUT the more people who put in these request things, the better the chance it'll get into the library. So, get your freinds, neighbors, family, enimies, to do the same 'request for order form.' If worst comes to worst, pay a hobo to fill it out.

But Haufel is right, if all else fails, buy the DVD's yourself and donate them to the library.

If you DO decide to donate, try to get it directly to the collection manager and be sure that they don't automatically just sell them off donations. Some libraries, like Tempe, love donations and will probably add them to the collection. But some may not be so open. It doesn't hurt to ask, and it's really worth it in the end.

Hey, I really like that idea ! Something the whole family can do too! The Libertarian in me wants to just go ahead and purchase a copy for the local libray my own self. But then I realize, the libraries HAVE a budget anyways, why not convince them to use it wisely to the benefit of all ?

My mom works at the Mesa library. They have no budget to buy almost anything, so if anyone wants to donate there go for it. I would but I have no money. :( Maybe when i have some money I can donate Firefly. Oooo and maybe some Farscape. I shall scour used video stores for perfectly serviceable, yet cheaper priced copies to donate to libraries and schols and orphanages. Well maybe the last 2 are out.

Just a little followup. In the first week the new DVDs in the Tempe library are checked out and have multiple holds requesting them. I call this a win.

Be sure to go ask your own library to get the Firefly DVDs (or give 'em a set yourself). The demand is clearly there ... waiting.

I agree, unless the local city area has a tremendously upside down set of priorities from any other "normal" city. The first thing that gets cut/trimmed back are the library and education budget. (I am in no way saying that this is correct, this is just an observation). Libraries can use the handout. Going ahead and donate.

Can I just say that this is the sort of thing that makes me proud to be a Firefly fan?

You guys rock. What a great thing to do.

I will, however, take a moment to second Haufel's advice -- definitely check with someone like a collections manager before you donate DVD's to a library. Many are thrilled to get donations, but most have collections policies, and reserve the right to not add things to the collection that don't fit in. (This is important, because many people use the public library as a dumping ground for old and unwanted books, which go straight into the library book sale, which is why every library in the country has a John Grisham novel with a torn cover and a couple of Danielle Steele books in the 25-cents-each pile.)

But if this is something you can afford to do, see if your library can use one. And if it's not, fill out those acquisitions requests.
