Hi Browncoats,

Apologies if this has been asked before (this is my first post, y'see), but I was wondering if Malcolm Reynolds is an alias?

I was just watching 'Safe' on the UK Sci-Fi channel again, and when they dock with the Alliance cruiser to get Book medical attention, the Fed checks out Mal's paperwork, and calls him Captain Harbatkin (sp?) - this is obviously what's on the official paperwork for Serenity, but - is that Mal's real name, or just another alias...

..Or is Serenity stolen?

:)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Harbatkin is an alias.

If you remember, in the episode "Bushwhacked", he gives his real name, and the Alliance commander called him by his given name during the interrogation as well. Obviously Malcolm Reynolds has records dating back to at least the War for Independence.

In Out Of Gas, Mal visits a used-ship lot to get Serenity, so I always assumed he paind for her. Then again, she may be stolen property, never rightfully the salesman's. Or perhaps Mal and Zoe stole her from the salesman? That would be difficult seeing as the ship seemed to be in need of a bit of repair before moving at all, but they could have had help. Perhaps their original "genious mechanic" helped them -- he had to do something to earn that "genious" title from Mal, and he doesn't seem the type to do much to deserve it. Perhaps he earned his respect by stealing Serenity from the used shipyard?
There I go, what-iffing too much again.. I have too much free time on my hands.

And also in The Message Tracey knows him as Reynolds, I doubt he would've needed an alias in the war...
