Lots of press on Serenity lately. Excellent!

Here's the latest:

Serenity Gets Darker

Nathan Fillion—who stars in the upcoming SF movie Serenity, based on Fox's canceled series Firefly—told SCI FI Wire that his character, Capt. Mal Reynolds, will be a little darker than he was allowed to be in the TV show. "I think he's still on that same vein," Fillion said in an interview during a break in filming at Universal Studios in Los Angeles last August. "I think if anything, I think he's a little darker than he was before. I think he's a little more empty than he was before. He, too, has had the rug pulled out from under him a couple of times since we've known him in the series. And I also think that, because we're in a film, another difference versus television is we can be allowed to be darker. ... We don't have a ... TV producer saying, 'Make him more likable and funny.'"

Fillion plays the captain of a small transport ship 500 years in the future, leading a ragtag crew of survivors from a galactic civil war. The film will feature the series' creepy cannibalistic renegades, the Reavers, and also give Reynolds a love interest, Fillion said. As for making the film, he added, "It's a little different. We had eight days to put on a one-hour show. Now we've got the better part of three months to put out a two-hour show. So the timing is a little different. But certainly I can tell that the quality is also extremely different."

As for his acting style, Fillion said, "I haven't made any drastic changes or anything. I have noticed that my nose is a lot bigger on screen. It's like, there are times when if you could put your arms up, that's about how wide my nostrils are. I've always known I have big nostrils, but now I could park a Buick in them." Serenity is slated for an April 2005 release. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

Okay, I've read about four articles from as many sources about Serenity, and they all use the SAME EXACT QUOTES. What the F? Are they cribbing from a press kit? Or did they all tour the set in a group, and not get any one-on-ones with the cast?

It's just kind of frustrating. I guess I should be glad that Serenity's getting a lot of press, but I'd like to read something new once in a while.

For them as interested, the most complete article is posted on the BDB. It has all the quotes I've read in the other articles, plus more.

I noticed that as well. It was probably stemming from that interview on www.serenitymovie.net, because there are a lot there. Or Joss just said the exact same things over and over.

Still, it's goot to get a lot of press on this now.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Cribbing them or not, it is good to see some press on the BDM. The more it gets out there, the more interest is generated in the film.

I can't wait until we are closer to the premiere date so we can see what the trailer, ads, and articles will look like and how they read.

It could be that a director at the end of a shoot wants to show the Press the set before it is struck, but just hasn't got the time or energy for a series of one-on-one's. It is likely that Whedon will have caught his breath by the time the marketing phase starts in ernest.

From Australia's Empire Film Magazine (December 2004, Issue #45)

In The Insider's You Heard It Here First column on pg. 18

Buffy creator Joss Whedon is well on the way to turning Firefly, his prematurely (and unjustly) cancelled sci-fi show, into Serenity, a full-length motion picture. Best summed up as "Far East meets old West in outer space", the film picks up six months after the series left off, but aims to be as accessible to newcomers as to seasoned fanboys. "It was the hardest thing I've ever written, to tell the story without repeating or contradicting myself," Whedon confesses to The Insider, reflecting on an arduous 15 months spent penning the script. "I never want to do that again." So, we've got to wonder , why did he do it in the first place? "Because I believe in the story, I believe in the characters and I believe in these actors," he insists. "I truly believe these people are worth, if not seven years of a series, then a big-ass movie."

Looks like even the Aussie mags are (finally!) getting into the act. Not a moment too soon...

'Yes... this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... "this land".' 'I think we should call it your grave.' 'Ah! Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!'
