From the Sydney Morning Herald

"Writer/director Joss Whedon had given the American Fox Network two of its defining shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, but he knew something was awry even before his new show, Firefly (cast pictured), went to air in September 2002.

Fox executives decided not to screen the two-hour pilot, which introduced the story of a space frontier society 500 years in the future with as many classic western elements (gunplay, whorehouses, travelling pastors who packed a punch and men in tight trousers) as science fiction ones. Instead they jumped straight to episode three.

Not surprisingly, audiences were initially perplexed.

Despite Firefly's witty scripts, which combined the best parts of two genres, an ensemble that looked like rivalling those of Whedon's earlier two shows and a fanatically loyal audience (who almost immediately set up chat rooms discussing the finer points of the show), the same executives cancelled the show after screening only 11 of the 14 episodes. In a perverse move, the pilot was then screened as the final episode. D'oh!

Those Whedon fans who have not already bought the DVD box set, which has all 14 episodes, can finally see Firefly, as Channel Seven began screening it last week. However, it has done it without publicity in the dead of night on Tuesdays."

MALICIOUS

Did any Aussie Browncoats really expect any better than "without publicity, in the dead of night, on Tuesdays?" Seriously?

Buffy and Angel were on the Fox network?

EDIT: sarcasm was involved in the above "question".

All three shows were made by 20th Century Fox Television. It's a production company that's a separate division from the network. Firefly is the only one shown on the Fox Network.
