Negating the Negative

As of recent, since the free screenings of Serenity, I have seen a lot of negative reviews or talk about it. This negative talk could potentially hurt Serenity in the long run by turning away potential fans because they read something negative online about it.

I think we as fans should begin countering this negativeness by posting positive talk about it where we can. Such as post a review for the DVD on sites like Amazon.com, IMDB.com, etc... Amazon.com even has a listing for the movie Serenity where people can begin reviewing the movie. The same can be done at IMDB.com. So if you saw an advance screening then go and review it.

If you have blogs, post stuff about Firefly or even Serenity on them. Post some stuff on forums you frequent and see if you cannot get a conversation going. I have converted many people to Firefly using this method even those that weren't so sure about it.

Just some thoughts to negating the negative that seems to have grown a bit since the beginning of the year.

Good idea. I haven't seen the screening but I think people who have should counter the negative with positive comments.

Is counter-propaganda really the way to go about this? I don't think we should engage those morons who've been critical of a rough cut-- haff of tehm caint spel innyways. We may only solidify a misperception that this movie doesn't have a broad appeal, that it is only a movie for a niche audience: fans of a failed TV show.

Whilst I agree to a certain extent of not descendng to the level of some of the negative posts, the problem remains that people who might think about going to the movie without knowing anything about it might read comments on Amazon or IMDB and see only negative comments, and might end up not going because they haven't seen any positive reviews.

I don't see any harm in posting a positive review of the preview screening, if only to counterbalance the negative reviews

I'm also unkeen to up the ante, mostly because there's bound to be a) lots of people that hate Firefly/Serenity for whatever reason and b) those that did attend the screening and hated it could see our attempt at drowning out their opinion and respond by posting every spoiler in plain text, unmarked, everywhere.

There are Joss haters out there and we have to accept that not everyone's going to love the show like we do. But real word of mouth is based around hearing from people you trust; friends, family, Internet buddies that you have known for a while. Just because somebody posts 300 messages saying "SERNEITY SUXORS!!!!! WHY NO DARK ANGEL MOVIE!???!!!", that's not really going to damage the movie's prospects.

I don't mean to confront those negative reviews or comments but to post more positive comments and reviews to sort of negate all the negative stuff. Because if people just read negative comments on the movie it might turn them away but if they read more positive then they might give it a chance.

Carefully measured responses to negative reviews are probably the best route to take. But for Ghu's sake, don't worry about countering the moronoids who post knee-jerk negativities on Ain't It Cool News and the like. Responses to those kind of slope-brows just feeds their egos, which are already hyperthyroid to begin with. Like a two-year old getting attention by pulling his pants off in church.

SERGEANTX

This movie's gonna blow doors and now amount of internet buzz is going make a hill of beans, either way. It took all kinds of bad luck and mishandling to keep the series from being a hit. It sounds to me like Joss finally has the control he needs to make something really remarkable. I'm willing to let the quality of Serenity determine it's fate.

At this point I'm far more concerned about the promotion that is or isn't going to happen between now and then. The movie will stand on it's own merits, but they'll have to entice people to see it to get the ball rolling.

Anyone have any reliable numbers on just how big FFFandom is these days? Besides here, and in the roleplaying game hobby, I rarely meet anyone who's even heard of it.

I went to IMDB to look at the reviews and was a little apalled. As it turned out many of the people who were at the screening thought they were going to see Star Wars or War of the Worlds. And thus never gave Serenity half a chance.

I think my problem though is that they went to see Star Wars and they thought Serenity's dialogue was bad and the plot was sub par. Have they been watching the first two Star Wars movies? Joss could be laying on his death bed and write better dialogue than I and II.

Apparently the movie didn't dig as deep into the characters as it did with 13 episodes, therefore a little harder to get outsiders interested.

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm not letting any bad press get to me.

Frankly, anyone that goes to see a film based on the IMDB and Amazon posted reviews doesn't have the wherewithall to purchase a movie ticket anyway...
