With the film pretty much complete (I'm guessing all they really need are a few fx shots and a final sound mix with music and sound fx and all), I'm curious as to whether or not the movie is going to be shown at some high profile film shindigs. I figured that if THE INTERPRETER and HOUSE OF WAX are going to get their big premieres at the high profile Tribeca Film Festival, then I was wondering if SERENITY would be shown outside of say The San Diego Comi-Con or any other sci-fi conventions during the summer in the States.

I think it would be really cool if the flick was actually submitted, or at least shown, at the Cannes Film Festival. A lot of big blockbusters get their exposure there alongside the indies and foreign flicks (I can just imagine Serenity as a huge balloon that flies by over the pavillions during peak moments). Although I wouldn't imagine the flick winning any awards there. Not unless the movie is like the prologue to OBJECTS IN SPACE spread out to two hours. Then maybe it would be considered.

If not Cannes, then at least Toronto, at the beginning of September before the film's actual release. Toronto International is a film friendly place that doesn't have the pretentiousness of Cannes. And if it's lucky enough, it'll win the coveted Audience Award. The flicks that win it usually end up doing incredibly well.

So what do you think? Do you picture the crew of Serenity waling down the red carpet by the french riviera or in the streets of Toronto?

I may be wrong but isn`t Cannes for Independant films & not major film studios?

Well, maybe, just maybe it will get some well earned publicity.

Cannes is mainly for independent and foreign film from all over the world to be shown in contention for the Palm D'or (don't know if the spelling's right, it's french for Golden Palm, which is one of the highest annual film prizes to win, alongside Best Picture at the Oscars) as well as other awards. It's been going on for fifty years and everything is shown there from dirt-cheap indie movies to big blockbusters. The studios use the festival to promote it's big ticket stuff, since hundreds of members of the foreign press are there. But it's rare for something out of Hollywood to win something so prestigious (the last film made by a Hollywood studio that won, excluding Miramax, was BARTON FINK in 91).

It might not get there, it might not win anything, but if it increases awareness and anticipation for our BDH's silver screen debut, then it's all good. Hey, who knows. France is essentially a nation of film geeks, so maybe they'd dig the movie on a number of levels that even we may not realize are there.
