I thought the ship with the emp ray was a republic ship. Did it have red paint on it?

There's a bunch of Reavers left out there in the black. I don't see all that many getting thinned out during the encounters in our Serenity story.......plenty of 'scary' still left out there I'm sure.

Mal's expression in the scrapyard when he first see's Serenity says it all.

The ship with the EMP was most definitely a Reaver ship. We had a whole big long drawn out discussion on that a while back.

I have wanted to say this for a long time but didn't think it was "thread-wothy" I do believe that if you draw the loose connection between Native Americans (Here-by reffered to as Indians) and Reavers than you can get the idea that reavers were smart. Indians could use guns but could not manufacture their own, same with Reavers (they made a booby-trap in Bushedwacked for crying out loud.) They could use the technology but could not maintain their own, that is why you have ships without core containment, it doesn't make the ship go faster but you need to inspect the core once every 5 to 8 years and possibly replace. Reavers don't replace, they steal newer, faster ships.
That being said I beleive Reavers get replacements. They take others and convert them. That might be the reason for the raping aspect of an ultra violent society. A reaver is a human that has been reduced to violent basic instincts, and one instinct is to breed. If you can't do it with faulty sperm than you start stealing people and see who take to the treatment. In Bushedwacked I think they had every intention of coming back and either getting the guy or seeing what ship they snagged with their hook. The ones that survive the initiation are sent back to the women and properly indoctrenated (Just cause you don't see a Reaver woman doesn't mean that they don't exist.) If a child is produced some sort of "Throw the child in the Black and see if it lives" kind of ritual is performed. If the child lives, new Reaver, if the child dies, lunch.
Anyway that is the way I see things.

Wow I'm not the only one with issues!

Just kidding; that sounds somewhat plausible ...

Mal: "Seems like we arrived here in the nick of time. What does that make us?"
Zoe: "Big damn heroes, sir!"
Mal: "Aint we just!"

So the emp cannon was a reaver weapon, but can I ask how do the reavers communicate to make a coherent attack let alone to simply run the ship?

Well Reavers must have somewhat calmer leadership structure, and some techies as well ....

I sort of get an image in my head of something like the Coyote and Sheep Dog in the Bugs Bunny cartoons where they were mortal enemies until the whistle blew and then they were polite to each other discussing family and what ever while on break or off duty. I could imagine the Reavers being polite until it came till boarding time and then it was show time or something like that.

Except for the blood curtling screams they hear as they creep past the quiet Reaver ships in Reaver Space....

Hahahaha, You couldn't here anything scream in space. Something I thought was funny, was in "Our Mrs. Reynold," when Jayne shoots out the net with his rifle, he needed a space suit, but in "Serenity" the mounted gun needed nothing, and how did Captain Reynolds get back inside?

In earnest, a firearm with brass rounds would be able to shoot just fine in space with out an external means of oxygen because there is enough oxygen in the round to ignite the primer and the chemical reaction of the gun powder creates its own oxygen.

I would have to guess that the deck gun was probably designed to be used in space. Mal probably used the same entry point that Jubal Early did. Since there's no wind resistance in space, it probably wouldn't have been too difficult.

All brass cased firearms can be considered to be designed to fire in space, and unless "Vera" was a gun designed to fire caseless ammunition, I suspect we caught the crew in a discrepancy. I honestly don’t know if caseless ammo can be fired in space or not since it is possible there is a pocket of air in the middle of the glue & powder casing.

There are guns that can fire under water and guns that can fire in the vacuum of space but like all things in life the initial spark gets the fire going but unless you have an oxidizer mixed in to the propellant (like solid rocket fuel or space munitions) you only go so far with little power, what those in the military call a "pop no kick".

I have my own theory on how Reavers function.

They are berserkers.

In battle they go into a blood rage like ancient Vikings but they are able to maintain a level of discipline when not on attack. They are still demented and twisted, but can communicate and perform semi-complex tasks.

Because of the small number of people affected by the Pax, they could of already had an enhanced rage mechanism, so most of them would of not been from the scientific or intellectual communities. They could have some who can maintain equipment, build simple machines and even navigate spaceships but civilization as we know it is now alien to them.

Has anyone noticed the only energy weapon reavers used is the EMP that was used by the ship pursuing Serenity? But they do fashion weapons that throw saw blades, nail balls and tranquilizer darts as well as an interesting assortment of bladed weapons.

Another thing that got me about reaver inconsistencies is the episode 'Bushwacked.' Ship of 14 families attacked, no blood anywhere, just some skinned bodies hung up by a chain in a locked store room and a cunning trap for any rescuers. Guess the one left alive could of cleaned up the mess, but the lack of blood probably was more for censors than for lack of detail.

I never actually gave the lack of blood any thought.
