Well the interesting thing is to watch who everyone is looking at when they make thier inner comments. River's hearing directed thoughts.

Simon is looking at "River". He's thinking if it weren't for her he'd still be at home.

Jane is looking directly at "River" when he says he's sorry, he's thinking about her.

Wash and Zoe are...um...busy

Mal is looking down, thinking to himself about what this whole experience means, not a damn thing.

Inara is looking at River, I didn't notice until I watched it for this post. So what does River need to tell Inara, another question without an answer.

anyway...

Book is looking at the table in front of him.

His thought is directed at himself (thinking in the third person). So what did Book do that he's so obsessed about? He's feeling guilt about something he did. but what?

Obviously something with the war, something that made the alliance brass very happy.

I guess we have to wait until April 22nd to find out.

I agree that Inara wants to hear a declaration admission from Mal, but I don't think it would change her chosen course of action in any way. On one level, she wants to hear it because she feels the same way. But I think she only wants it as something to take with her when she goes; a memory, a barrier against loneliness.

She's also searching for something specific to force her to make the break with Serenity, and which to some extent she finds in HoG when Nandi lets slip about Mal's feelings. As Inara says at the end of HoG, the ship and its crew have become so precious to her that they're holding her in some way, making it so that she doesn't want to leave. If Mal admits his feelings for her, it makes him an obvious and irrefutable 'complication' - at which point, for whatever mysterious purpose underlies her choices, she will have to leave.
