I liked it straight away but it wasn't until Our Mrs Reynolds - I was like wow this is really Joss-like! By Out of Gas I was hooked and I was so devestated when my video recorder chewed up my tape with that and Ariel on it.

I think my Mum realised my obsession before I did because I must have gone on about it so much that she actually bought me a multiregion DVD player and the US Dvds for Christmas. Bless her!

I didn't actually get a chance to watch them till pretty recently but now I'm watching them over and over I even gave up watching my brand new season3 West wing box set that I'd beeen waiting for for months in order to watch firefly again and again. I stil haven't seen the second half of season three.

Finding this site and then going to the Blackpool shindig have pretty much pushed my obsession over the edge. I hope you're all pleased with yourselves.

I got a confession to make... I have had some less than flattering thoughts on Firefly.

At first I knew only that Firefly existed because of several articles with accompaning pictures in a british sci-fi tv magazine that I read. Since it was cancelled before it was ever seen on this side of the Atlantic, there were no raving reviews by the magazine's editors, only some reader comments, but not much info. Unlike Andromeda, which was exposed a lot in the magazine and had tons of interviews with the (supporting) cast.

I came away with 'Aparently it's Joss's fault for putting on a weird show and it got cancelled because nobody would watch it.' I didn't know any of the actors, and it did read a little wacky. A priest, a whore, a mercenary and some others on a spaceship in a cross between sci-fi and western? I was somewhat reserved for watching it, but still kept the door open. I had always liked the western genre, which at that time sounded more interesting a lure than the fact that it was a show set in space.

When the DVD box was offered on pre-order, I thought long and hard. There was no indication it was ever going to be on Dutch tv, and the price was very reasonable, so I thought 'what the hell how bad can it be' and ordered it. I mean, I liked Bordertown and Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman... I was clearly desperate for anything Western.

Couple of weeks before the DVD was released, Firefly started airing on Dutch tv. I didn't watch it, by now I knew the story about the order in which it should have aired and decided to wait for the DVD set. Besides, there's Midsomer Murders or Judge John Deed on at the same time, can't watch it all.

Then one evening I was zapping along the channels since my favourite crimeshow wasn't aired that night and ran in the middle of 'Shindig'. Right where Mal slams the sword in the pillar.

And I kept watching. Right down to the end. Glued to my little box. And laughing! It made me laugh! First conscious thought when the episode ended: "They cancelled THIS?" Second conscious thought: "When's my DVDbox gonna ship?"

My reaction on receiving the DVDbox was the same as Brent's from the PVP comic. Only I didn't call in sick for work. But I did have several sleepless nights and managed from Tuesday night (delivery of the DVD box) to Sunday midafternoon to see every episode three times. What struck me then was how well the actors had their characters down (being first season and all) and how much they were a group already.

P.s. "They cancelled THIS? Unbelievable!" were the exact same words my first convert used when she handed me back the DVD box.

"I actually thought I was defending your honor and I never, ever back down from a fight."
"Yes you do! You do all the time!"
"Well... yeah. But I'm not backing down from this one!"

RELFEXIVE

Just to add to my previous comment...

The theme song has been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. So I was listening to it when I was driving the other day (the joys of mp3 players!) and started singing along.

And then yesterday... true story... I started singing (well, mumbling) it in the shower.

I *am* a true crazy person.

Mal: "We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so... very... pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die."

Well, we were at the cinema today, and just before the movie started, the only thing I could think of was "The Special Hell"

Experience has taught me that interest begets expectation, and expectation begets disappointment, so the key to avoiding disappointment is to avoid interest. A=B=C=A, or whatever
