HELL'S KITTEN

Hiya.

I searched through as many of the threads as I could before my attention dwindled to zero, and I didn't notice if anyone had written anything about this past weekend's comic con in Chicago. So, I figured I may as well.

First, I'd like to thank the Chicago BrownCoats who set up a great fan table and handed out shinies (I was the chick in the "Serenity" shirt who kept popping up every now and again and who barely said a word cuz I'm so damn anti-social... nice t'meetcha, though ). I brought around a bunch of people to collect pins and keychains and directed many more to the fan table so they could all pitch in with the Serenity advertising. Good on ya, guys. I was pleasantly surprised at the large number of folks - pros, dealers and visitors - who were so supportive of and couldn't wait for Serenity.

Second - and the reason I wanted to talk about Wizard World Chicago here - I was bored enough to attend the "Wizard World Fan Awards" bit that was held on Friday evening. For those of you who've never been or aren't into the comic-geek thing, Wizard Magazine is a fanboy formed and fueled 'zine that deals pretty exclusively with the world of comics and related things, and they've grown fat enough with the dripping geek love that they've been able to put on a bunch of conventions around the country every year. (Don't mistake my vitriol for comic book geek hatred; I am a long-time fangirl myself. The slobbering geek boys' club thing they're all still clinging to just gets me annoyed a bit.) ANYway. Every year, Wizard has their "Fan Awards" where they have a bunch of categories with about 5 nominees each and fans can vote for their favorite. Dunno if the nominees are compiled from a bunch of write-ins or what.

In all the categories that had anything to do with Whedon and Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men, they won:

Favorite Writer: Joss Whedon
Favorite Artist (Penciller): John Cassaday
Favorite Ongoing Series: Astonishing X-Men by Whedon and Cassaday
Favorite Heroine: Kitty Pryde from Astonishing X-Men
Comics' Greatest Moment: Colossus' return in Astonishing X-Men

And they were up against some pretty tough competition: Joss was favored over Bendis and Cassaday over Jim Lee. Jim Lee, the Guest Of Honor, the man whose sketch of a spandex covered boob will cost you $500, the man whose autograph line started three weeks ago and you still won't get one. (Did I use "whose" correctly? I always get that wrong.) I mean, for all the fanboys who vote on this thing, these victories really took me by surprise (christ... Kitty Pryde?? never in a million years would I have picked her to win anything... talk about a useless fluff character....). And considering the fact that all those hardcore, under-roos wearing, real female-fearing fanboys were very vocal about their hatred over the announcement of Whedon as the next X-scribe, these minor awards victories should make us all proud of our boys (and should allow us to address all the nay-sayers with a simple "Up your arses" ... um ... were we the type to do that...).

Joss and John done good. And people out there know it.

Cheers.

This was my first Wizard World experience and I really enjoyed it. Many thanks to the Chicago Browncoats table! I love my shiny swag hehehe I would be the gal with the purple hair that just walked up, said hello...pointed to my JOSS IS BOSS button and said thank you. I CAN be social but it massive crazy setting like that, I tend to just end up being way quiet.

Very cool on Joss getting fan choice award. Very nice indeed :)
