I was thinking about how they got from the first poster we saw to the current, official poster. It looks like first somebody got worried about such a young, crazy-looking girl holding a gun, so they took it out. Then somebody decided the gun was needed for the "danger" effect or some such and they put it back in, but also replaced the picture of Summer with one that makes her look ten years older and not so crazy.

Personally, the first one is my favorite. River looks young (which she is) and a little bit crazy. It looks grittier, a bit washed out - it's got a lived in feel. I also like that the rest of the crew has a place.

I do like the official one too, the only problem with it is that I haven't seen it in a theater yet!

I think the second one you posted is just the cover for the novelization, so it might not be as much of a linear evolution as it is branched: the book cover got to keep "Spooky River" and the One-Sheet got to keep the gun. I also wonder if the first one had a more washed out look, or if that's just an artifact of the image being taken from a snapshot of the poster.
