HAZE

The other day I got a shock.

River is a very important character to me. I am a man who suffers from mental illness, nowhere near as bad as Rivers but Im social phobic obsessive-compulsive and other things im not going into. I sometimes speak in non-sequiturs and I do come off as being somewhat “odd”. I can relate to River in a lot of ways. So you can imagine my shock when I came upon a poster of River bent over in a martial arts pose holding an axe in one hand and a massive sword in the other. As I say a shock.

I had been avoiding any information about Serenity be it PR or reviews so as not to spoil the surprise. You see one of the things I love about River is the characters’ strength. And how it is not the conventional physical or violent strength that has become so associated with the word. It’s an internal strength, a mental strength, dare I say a spiritual strength. A strength that stems in no way from the fact she can shoot three guys with her eyes closed. The inner strength is River, the marksmanship is what was done to her.

In the show when River shoots those guys it is in no played as “wow looks at River shoot them isn’t that cool”. It’s played as sinister, wrong. As wrong and as forced as her mental problems. However when River saves the ship this is in no way sinister or wrong, she is doing so with her own skills, her own strength. This is something that came for her, the real her, not the condition not what was done to her. The Real her.

So to see her there in her action woman pose filled me with sadness. I should say at this point that I am not passing judgement on the movie, as I have not seen it. It turns out that the only cinema I can go to (Social phobia) is not showing it so it does not seem likely that I will until I buy the DVD. I have no idea if the image seen in the poster bares any relation to the movies content, im just commenting on the poster.

Im really tired of Hollywood. Im tired of being patronized. Im tied of every trailer and post screaming “come little boy with no attention span, come look at the nice woman’s boobs” (Yes iv seen that poster as well).

All I could think as I looked at that poster is “that’s not River. That’s not River at all. And I hope to God that’s not what she is in the movie.”

So I have to ask what do you think of the way the movie is being advertised? How do you feel about the way River is being portrayed? What do you think of that poster of Kaylee holding the gun? Does the PR reflect the film?

Please share.
