Hey there, guys and gals, how are ya? I'm writing because I need some help. I'm trying to find music similar to that found on the Firefly soundtrack.

It would be best if it was light, country, guitar music with no lyrics or spoken words at all just like the FF music.

I need this music to fill the background for a Serenity RPG I'm about to run, and I don't wanna run the FF soundtrack over and over again. ;)

Any suggestions as to similar albums, artists, soundtracks, etc would be most helpful. Thanks in advance.

RELFEXIVE

I've put together a playlist of such music from what I have. Not all of it is instrumental though. Some of it works for Companion-y moments (the tracks by Natacha Atlas), others for frontier bar moments (like the entertainingly named Hog Of The Forsaken, from Deadwood). Most of the Ennio Morricone tracks work as 'harkening back to the war' music. Others just kinda fit.

Natacha Atlas - The Righteous Path
Ennio Morricone - Il Tramonto (from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly)
Jelly Roll Morton - Stars And Stripes Forever (from Deadwood)
Ennio Morricone - Il Treno (from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly)Militare
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - A Wedding Interrupted
Last Of The Mohians - Promentory Part 1
Natacha Atlas - Ashwa
Ennio Morricone - Square Dance (from A Fistful Of Dollars)
Kate Rusby - Underneath The Stars
Ennio Morricone - La Storia Di Un Soldato (from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly)
Macross Plus - Welcome To Sparefish
Bruce Springsteen - Devils And Dust
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - The Encounter
June Carter Cash - Will The Circle Be Unbroken (from Deadwood)
Last Of The Mohicans - Promentory Part 2
Michael Hurley - Hog Of The Forsaken (from Deadwood)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - To The South
Ennio Morricone - La Carrozza Dei Fantasmi (from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly)
Natacha Atlas - Iskanderia
Ennio Morricone - Without Pity (from A Fistful Of Dollars)
David Schwartz - Theme From Deadwood (from Deadwood)
Ennio Morricone - Il Colpo (from For A Few Dollars More)
Natacha Atlas - Kidda
Ennio Morricone - Il Forte (from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly)
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Night Fight
Natacha Atlas - Leysh Nat'Arak
Michael Brook - Arriving In Deadwood (from Deadwood)
Gustavo Santaolalla - Iguazu (from Deadwood)
Hans Zimmer - Vale Of Plenty (from Black Hawk Down)

How's that lot sound?

"My God - you're like a trained ape. Without the training."
"Come a day there won't be room for naughty men like us to slip about at all..."
"SUMMER!!"

Damn, that's a shiny list for me to start from, thanks! I'll check out samples of each of those and see if they're what I'm lookin' for.

First of all, how awesome is "Hog of the Forsaken?" That's a great song.

Secondly, you may want to check out the soundtrack from "Oh Brother Where Art Thou." (It's mostly got lyrics, but it's good old-timey music.)

If you're REALLY ambitious, check out the Anthology of American Folk Music (a 6 CD collection of old-timey, early folk music collected in the first half of the twentieth century, but dating from much earlier). It's expensive, and has all kinds of music, so it won't all fit the "Firefly" bill, but it's great stuff, instrumental and with lyrics.

DONCOAT

Someone on this forum previously recommended the music of Nickel Creek as being somewhat like the Firefly soundtrack. I picked up their eponymous CD (there are several others as well).

I found their music to be a bit closer to traditional country/bluegrass than to Edmundson's. I do like it very much, though, and many of their tracks are instrumental-only.

The "Nickel Creek" CD also has a tune on it that never fails to choke me up: "The Hand Song".

Ain't about you, Jayne. It's about what they need.

DATAWHAT

This thread is years old but I pulled together many of the suggestions from this forum into a Spotify playlist available (with lots of blathering commentary) here:

http://datawhat.com/2018/01/music-like-firefly.html

My selections are all instrumentals that could be found in the Firefly and Serenity universe...mostly instrumental acoustic folk with some bluegrass/Chinese hybrid songs and a couple appropriate tunes from film and video game soundtracks. Mostly stuff that could be on in the background while reading or maybe starting a role-playing game that all had the same mood and feel, and kept the signal going.

WISHIMAY

Cool thread. I would add Sherriff Scott and the Deputies and Band of Heathens. Not much of the eastern flare(or instrumental), but they feel jaunty to me anyway
