Correct me on this... If my understanding is right, Fox has the rights for 10 years to the show Firefly, and Universal has the rights to the movie. So Universal can make as many movies as they want, correct? Well I personally would rather have more shows than more movies, ***spoiler*** especially since something happened two particular times to two particular people that really bummed me out. Watching the show, the characters get to be a family, and I like it that way. Sooo..... whats to keep us, the fans from rallying together to save up money for the show. Now I have no clue on numbers, but why couldnt the fans buy the rights to the show from fox. There has to be oodles of us out there, and if we were to all pitch in, why couldnt each of us own the rights to the show, kinda like stock or something? Is that even feasible? Im guessing to buy the rights we would need seven figures, but I have faith. We've done the impossible before ( well... I am a recent convert, I will be honest, I was not an original Browncoat, but thats because Fox's advertising sucks, as well as the time slot it was in ), so why cant the impossible be done again? Let me know where the catches are that I might have missed. I am a dreamer, I know... but, an optimist as well, so why couldnt something like this be done?

No matter how much money we get, they still have to be willing to sell.

But you're right, that's a hell of an idea.

It would have to be organized... probably a holding company created, with VERY specific instructions on what to do with the money if F*X won't sell... I honestly have no idea if this is feasible.

It's a moot point. Joss Whedon doesn't want to return to the Firefly series. He's just interested in the movies now.

But it would be great to get two more movies.

Inara: I'm using what?
Mal: Your feminine wiles. Your companion training, your some-might-say uncanny ability to make a man sweaty and/or compliant, of which I have had just about enough today.

Where did you read that? My guess is, the only reason he is weary about the shows, is because Fox has their paws wrapped tight around the rights. There was eight months between Objects in Space and Serenity, so that gives us plenty more misbehaving to do. I, and many others I'm sure, would be willing to try and set up such a undertaking, and if Fox doesn't want to sell, then everyone gets their money back of course.

I actually think Joss and company WOULD do a series if it had the production values of a movie (Like HBO does with Deadwood)... time to develop and lots of great fx and lights and cameras etc..

That is my feeling... but I could be wrong.. it has happened before once or twice

JADEHAND

Yay the 23rd thread about this in 2 weeks!
It's great to see this level of enthusiasm in the new converts, Welcome aboard. 2 things to start. 1st: the 10 years would have started at least 3 years ago, so we'd be at around 7 years to go. plenty of time for 2 more films, before going back to TV. 2nd: the 10 year thing turns out to have been just something someone made up. So, that's not really an issue.
Next, Universal owns NBC, I'd rather see it back on TV on a network. HBO sucks. I think if Universal was smart enough to see the potential for a movie, they'll see sequels and TV possibilities too, and they have the type of money neccesary to get the rights from FUX. Give them time, they'll come around.

My only real concern is Fox holding the rights in a deathgrip given the money that Firefly has brought in on DVD, coupled with the money that Serenity and the extra merchandise has brought/will bring in. However, I agree with Jadehand, Universal definitely has the coin to pony up for the rights if they so decide.

(Crosses fingers and hopes for new Firefly/Serenity on the Sci-fi Channel.)

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

Ok, so there has been numerous posts about this subject, that simply means there are plenty that want to do something. Why don't we take action. The least it will do is show that there is an extremely loyal fan base, and if Fox doesn't understand why everyone is in love with the show so much to begin with, they will understand the numbers. There are more and more people captivated by this story every day. Unfortunately, Ive only converted one person myself so far, but there will be more. So who can tell me how much the rights to the show might cost? Lets start with that, and go from there.

A bunch of points:

The scale of money required to huge. Incredibly huge. You'd have to get over 20 million dollars to fund a series. If every active browncoat (about 50,000?) wanted to give money (which they wouldn't) they'd have to give at least $400 to come anywhere close to the amount needed.

This has been tried before with Enterprise. All sorts of problems occurred. Even if you got the money you've got to get that money to the show. The only way of feasably doing that is starting your own company as Fox cannot accept what is in essence a donation, legally.

Then you've got to get a network to broadcast it, which Fox doesn't want to. Which means you need more money to buy the rights to the show. However, you've then got to convince another network that picking up the show is profitable, which no-one thinks it is.

Seriously, check out the dozens of other posts on this subject that go into huge amounts of details as to why this is never going to be possible.
I commend you enthusiasm, but this has been shot down so many times before...

Hedgehog is correct... the amount is daunting.. but I think there are other ways to approach the dilemma that may yet yield the desired results..

cetainly buying the dvds and turning on your mates who then buy the dvds and so on and so on..

also, getting the cast and crew on high profile shows and in magazines etc. The higher THEIR profile, the more likely that their pet projects get considered.

Serenity did respectable in a dull Box office season and the dvds are doing very well too...

There is still hope, even if we couldn't really raise 20 million

I don't know how willing Fox would be to sell, considering they're a soulless corporation. If they had a soul they would make more episodes. But there's bound to be a handful of us Brown Coats who know the ins and outs of businesses and buying and selling shows.

If it did all come together we would definitely need the cooperation of Mutant Enemy as well as the cast and crew but the idea of the fans owning the show would definitely be an ideal scenario of an ideal world.
