A Healthier, Cheaper (but still tasty!) Fruity Oaty Bar

When I found out there was a recipe for Fruity Oat Bars, I was excited but bummed; the idea that I could make my own Fruity Oaty Bar was great but I kind of wanted to come up with my own recipe. So, I read the ingredients for the Fruity Oaty Bars and was faced with a problem: I'm a vegan (for health reasons), completely broke, and not a big fan of the crunchy. I came up with my own recipe for Fruity Oaty Bars that won't kill you, is cheap, and delicious.

Base Mixture Ingredients

- 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
- 3/4 cup quick cooking oats
- 1 tablespoon flax meal (one egg if you're omni)
- 1/3 - 3/4 cup sugar (depends on how sweet you like things. I used 1/3 cup)
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Instructions (It looks long, but it's not hard to make them)

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix the base ingredients together in one bowl.

3. Get out four smaller bowls and scoop 1/3 (slightly heaping) cup of the base mixture into each bowl.

4. Pick four fruits (I chose pineapple, orange, blueberry, and apple as it's all I had in the house. I would recommend using banana in place of one of the citrus fruits for a more powerful flavor).

5. Peel a medium-sized orange and blend half of it until it's as liquid-y as possible. It should yield 1/4 cup. I suppose orange juice could be a substitute

6. If you have fresh pineapple and blueberries, repeat step number 5 until you yield 1/4 cup of each. If you have frozen fruit, like I did, blend each with about 3-6 tablespoons of water until you yield 1/4 cup.

7. Measure out about 1/3 cup of unsweetened applesauce (1 pre-packed cup = 1/2 cup applesauce).

8. Mix each fruit-liquid with base mixtures.

9. Use food dye if you want funky colors -- just follow the directions on the box.

10. Grease a mini-loaf pan or a 9x9 inch glass pyrex dish.

11. Spoon the batter into your pans/dish 1/4 of an inch thick. You can make polka-dotted bars or stripes, depending on how you spoon in the batter. Make sure the batter is pretty even (or thicker in the middle) so they don't fall apart.

12. Put them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. Check them periodically by gently tapping them. If they feel spongy before the time is up, then take them out. My oven is old, and that could have changed the timing.

13. Let bars cool for 1 minute, then flip the pan over. Cut into bars if you used the dish, and then remove.

14. EAT!

Serving size: 8

Thanks for the recipe! My wife and I are thinking about hosting a marathon (all 14 eps+BDM) at some point and have been trying to think up some Firefly related food to serve. Strawberries will definitely be there! Go any other recipes?

Mmmm. Strawberries! I snuck some into the theater with me the first time I went to see Serenity.

I've been thinking about a recipe with rosemary and TVP (textured vegetable protein). I like TVP plain, so I have no clue what the big deal with "protein" tasting bad is. Oh well. I'll think of something. :)

My wife loves the idea of the Fruity Oaty bars, so we'll definitely be making them (I'll post how they went over). I've also gotten recipes for bao (Our Mrs. Reynolds) and a recipe for Mudder's Milk (this one suggests finding brave souls to try it-sounds intringingly dangerous). It will be an interesting night. Needless to say, plenty of pepto will also be on hand that night!

It seems like most "Firefly" recipes I've come across have had some pretty definite flaws, IMHO. Sure, I haven't come across too many recipes, but I haven't been too pleased with the results and I'm an avid cook. I don't go a day without cooking or baking (And it's "real" cooking by the MB definition).

If anyone is interested in a crunchy Fruity Oaty Bar, or any other dish, I'll be willing to come up with a recipe.

Also, if you want to throw in some chopped nuts or chopped dried fruit, I'm sure that would taste great. I had very little in the house at the time I threw this recipe together, so I didn't get to experiment as much as I'd have liked. Maybe when the financial situation brightens.

I was thinking of taking a basic Mudslide recipe and making some changes. No need to make it be disgusting just becuase the "real" mudder's milk is supposed to be yucky!

The literal approach is to get some oats, old fashioned, and some Fruit Loops. Crush loops according to color, add some oats,and cook to make crispy. Much easier to color coordinate this way, and safe to eat raw.

May not be smart, and it may not please you, but you're definitely gonna see what I have to say.

it's basically our version of a browncoat recipe book ( not really show related, but hey whatever)

In response to the request for the fruit oatie bars

3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2/3 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
2 egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla or maple extract
1/2 teaspoon butter-flavored extract

1 1/2 cups peach preserves
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus extra for dusting, optional
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1/2 teaspoon lemon extract
Powdered sugar, for dusting, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

For the cookie: In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, and cinnamon. In a large mixing bowl, with an electric mixer, cream the butter, granulated sugar, and dark brown sugar. Beat in egg whites, vanilla and butter flavor extracts. Carefully fold in the flour mixture with a rubber spatula. Wrap dough in plastic and chill until dough is firm, about 30 minutes in freezer.

For the peach filling: In a medium mixing bowl, mix peach preserves with cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon zest and lemon extract. When dough has chilled, roll out dough 1/4-inch thick and cut into pieces about 2 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches long. Place a teaspoon of peach filling in the center of each piece and fold each end of the dough to the center to cover the filling. Flatten cookies slightly and place them seam down and 1-inch apart on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Bake for about 12 minutes, until lightly browned and just firm. Cool on the cookie sheet. Dust cookies with a mixture of powdered sugar and cinnamon, if using.

Not my recipe. I shamelessly copied this from fireflywiki.

Wife soup.

3 or 4 (or more) big potatoes. Peel if you like.
some carrots
as many whole garlic cloves as you like
a pound or so of beef or chicken, ground or otherwise
two cans of broth (beef or chicken)
a couple bay leaves
half a bag or so of frozen peas
about 1/2 c. of elbow macaroni
monterey jack cheese

Cut up the potatoes and carrots into little pieces. Cover them with water, add salt and boil them til they're good and tender.
Drain off about 3/4 of the boiling water.
Return to heat and add the broth.
Once it's all simmering, crumble in the meat and bring up to a healthy simmer.
Cut the garlic cloves in half and drop them in there.
Drop in the bay leaves.
Sprinkle on pepper.
Be generous.
Let this cook for awhile. Couple hours, whatever you got. Stir it every once in a while. (Crockpots might be good for this.)

Eventually add the macaroni. Don't put too much in right away. You can always add more later.

About half an hour before you want to eat, dump in the peas.

This should come out pretty thick. If it's too thick, add some water and bring back to a simmer. Keep an eye on it so it doesn't scorch.

In a deep bowl.
Add shredded cheese to taste.
Add crackers if you like.

Friends and family a kiss on the cheek and tell them they done good.
