Hey All.

I need some help with a major/minor plot detail that is open up to interpretation, but I'm sure somewhere there's an official canon bit of info.

I'm writing my latest chapter of YOU CAN'T GO HOME AGAIN, and I'm thinking of a scene where Simon, Kaylee, Gabriel and Regan are in the hovercar that Kaylee fixed up in Chapter 7. I'm just wondering how high the car should go.

I mean, does it only hover a few feet off the ground like the mule in SERENITY, or can it go high in the air and follow a flight pattern like in the STAR WARS prequels. It's just that I always imagined the Core planets to be like Coruscant in the STAR WARS series. The entire planet just one beautiful, gigantic city. And you always saw the lines in the air of the hovercraft and speeders like a regular street, or a grid in the air. I know in "Ariel" you saw shuttles flying around the city, but what about regular cars and hovercraft. I always thought they'd be like the hovercars in BACK TO THE FUTURE 2. They can fly into the stratosphere, but also hug the ground.

It's just that the scene I have in mind has them flying over the city to get to the Metro and Kaylee's looking out the window, awestruck at Capital City at night all lit up. Kind of like flying in to New York City at night and seeing it from the plane. For the Tam's, it's nothing special, they'd seen it every day of their lives. But for Kaylee, who's only seen the junkyards of the Core, this is the most awesome thing she's ever seen, despite the fact that it's now an almost bankrupt city.

So I'm wondering if I'm shooting myself in the foot if I have them flying over the city in just a regular hovercraft and not a shuttle. Is it written in stone that hovercrafts can only hover a few feet off the air, or is it one of those "writers can make it whatever they want" kind of thing like robots. They never adressed the issue of robotics, so I'm guessing robots is fair game in a Firefly/Serenity fanfic.

It can go either way. I'd just like Kaylee having a birds eye view instead of a street level P.O.V.

"Maybe we should start calling your friend 'Padme' because he loves 'Mannequin Skywalker' so much, Right? (imitating robot) Danger...danger...my name is Anakin...my shitty acting is ruining saga."

Excerpt of internet teaser for CLERKS 2.

There were also flying cars in 'Safe' when Simon's dad is getting him out of the lockup on Osiris in a flashback.

And isn't there one in Serenity when the ship lands just before Mal meets with Fanty and Mingo?

I think the BDM's hover-mule was partially "bigger budget", partially "appeal to a mainstream audience" (which expects stuff like sound in space and flying cars in a science fiction movie). I'm only guessing, but that sounds workable.

There would probably be hovering vehicles on the core planets, but since such vehicles would be more costly to maintain, both in terms of parts and specifically-educated mechanical personnel...not so much on the fringe worlds and formerly-independent planets. The fringe worlds can't get sufficient medical supplies, let alone any needed maintenance parts for hovervehicles. If they don't move large amounts of goods or people (the maglev train in Train Job), the outer planets have other priorities.

WHOOPS

Id expect it would be like laser guns only the rich could afford them. And as for the mule id expect working ones like the mule are probably cheaper than the more sporty ones id expect.

Yep... Think that is what HOG was all about... (besides whuwas) A take on how inevitably someone will usurp the power of da people and horde possible goods. Most people are on horses. Burgess has all the toys and the rest, just like "moonfolk", got what they CAN get. More about just trying to survive than availability.

Anyway... it seems Regi... it would depend on the framework setup by planet/city planners that affects travel. Surely, if the shuttles can take off instantly from the ground and travel into space and dock, then cars of relatively the same size can do the same thing. (shuttles that don't disturb tea cups on take off, mind you) Well, at least the techno is there. If there are specific city or planet flying guidelines, cars are id'ed and cannot fly above certain altitudes. "restrictor plate" for the future

It may be the difference in cost only. Like a hummer vs. small car. small cars only go on the road. Hummers have alot more terrain options. I'd say run with it. I know, I was more concerned with the char. dev than the T babble.
